What is the difference between the f numbers in the DSLR lenses?

i am looking to buy a zoom lens for my new dslr
i am new to photography and dslr
but i understand enough to know that the smaller the f number the wider the apperture
and better options when taking pictures
the problem i have with the f number is the way they are displayed.

what everyone seems to care to talk about is 1.2 2.3 3.0 and
whatever has a number a period and a number 0.0

what is the difference between 1:4 and 1.4 usually displayed as 1:4 - 5.6
why the Colon instead of the period?
and what is the 5.6 representing?

My camera records videos but no sound why?

I read the manual its a Nikon model #S6500 it works fine but when i playback my movies i shoot its in slow motion and no sound and so if you have this type of camera or have any suggestions i'd like that

My pictures turn out black?

I have a Nikon D5100 and I'm just learning how to use it. The lens cap is NOT on. I was trying to figure out how to adjust the ISO, aperture, and whatnot; but now the pictures all come out black when I'm in the manual mode. It takes pictures just fine in the other modes, but I can't adjust all these things in other modes. Is there something that I need to adjust in the manual mode to make the pictures turn out normally?

So i have vivitar 35-105mm lens. My camera is Nikon d40?

What kind of adapter or ring or whatever should i buy so i can use the vivitar lens? The seller told me. That the lens has cannon connection. Im not good at cameras guys.help me out please so i can use the lens even if its manual. Thanks

the same combination is priced at Rs.63942 WITH an offer going on in nikon in their official website. How is that flipkart gives away the same for almost 10,000 rupees cheaper?

Nikon D800 problems?

Hi! So I worked for a photography company for a year just doing bits of photography here and there on a d800. I have since left and purchased my own.
I have not a clue what I'm doing with it but I'm not sure if the lens is broken? I purchased a nikorr 28-70 and it won't auto focus, not manually focus. I don't have a memory card yet as I'm still waiting for it to arrive so can't actually take pictures but I just wanted to mess about with it until then.
What could the problem be?
Also how do I switch the the screen for video mode? Because I flicked the switch and nothing happened!

using a pretty decent micro lens, the Nikon 85mm f/3.5G AF-S DX ED VR, i wanted to get the ENTIRE car in crisp clear focus, so i used a low aperture f 4 but half of it was still out of focus.

anyway i could have gotten more in focus?

How to do timelapse and slow motiom videoon nikon p330?

On p330 how do I do timelapse. When the mode is enabled do I press the shutter button (when I do that the screen turns black) ot do it hit thr record button
And for alow motion recording how do I do it and enable it
