My birthday is on the 17th and I am buying my birthday present if I have enough money for either a Nikon D3100 or an Acer computer touchscreen with Windows 8. I have an Acer Aspire laptop with Windows 7 and honestly, I don't know why I want a Windows 8. Maybe just because it looks cool? But the thing is, I don't know if Windows 8 is worth my money. I saw the W8 Acer in coscto the other day and I just loved it. I just don't know if I will regret buying it. I love to write so I need word and I also listen to music a lot on my computer.Am I able to download iTunes or do I have to use the music app it's got on W8? What are the PROS and CONS of W8?
Am I better off getting a camera or just saving my money or getting the computer? Please apply as much information about W8 as you can. Thanks.
Added (1). Also, I forgot to check the Acer laptop, but it's the one that's at least 18mm thin therefore, would it have a DVD hard drive? Or would i not be able to watch DVD's?

Would this be a good lens for me to purchase? - 1
I have had a Nikon D3100 for about 2-3 years now. I got it as my first DSLR camera and I learned a lot about how to take photos with it! I got it with a 18-200mm lens, which is great. But I'd like to get a more portable lens for when I'm just hanging out with my friends or while I'm on the go. I was thinking the 50mm f/1.8 nikkor lens would be good, since it has such a small f value (the lens I have right now will only go as small as f/5.6). I was wondering if this would be a good lens for me to get? It's only 140$ so that's not toooo pricy.
Let me know what you think, thanks.

Next lens step for a Nikon D7000?
For my birthday i got a Nikon D7000, i got the standard lens with it, (18-105mm VR Lens) I want to upgrade but im not sure what VR lens to get now, i dont want to spend to much on one, i do want one that will zoom more, but then again a pancake lens would be good for up close. I think i want my next step to be one that will zoom more. What do you guys think? Thanks.

The best quality. Nikon vs Canon?
My previous question about Nikon vs Canon I had a few choices in cameras. But now I am needing to know the one to choose for the best quality I know they both have a good zoom option but I am looking for a camera to take beautiful pictures.
Added (1). I'm not talking about compact cameras.
Added (2). I am needing something that takes better outside pictures.
Added (3). Because I am getting into the more professional aspect of photography.

Is the AF-S DX 18-105mm lens good for a beginner?
I've decided on getting the Nikon D5100 as it's in my budget, and is reasonable for saving up. I've begun saving up/snooping around and doing research etc.and I've found a relatively decent priced package for £449.95 (including VAT).It has an AF-S DX 18-105mm VR lens within the package. I just would like some advice.
It's my first DSLR, but I've been doing a lot of research, and have had an interest in photography for quite a while. I have heard/read that you should avoid 'starter kit lenses', but I'm not sure if they're really reliable sources. It's f/3.5-5.6 so 18mm focal length with maximum aperture of f/3.5 and 105mm focal length with maximum apperture of f/5.6. I haven't had much experience with difference of lenses etc., the only instance being with film cameras and lenses, and even then it was only between two different lenses.
It would be used mainly for portrait photography, of family, the dog/cat (who does stay generally still, but may move a little) so always/mainly a focus subject in the photograph.
I was just wandering, for a first DSLR & lens, is it good quality for money? I mean, I can only really afford to save for this and will ask for about £50 of input for a christmas present (so I pay about £400 and my present from family is about £50 contribution.) I will expand on my lenses later on in my photography life, but for now I don't have the money, so is it good for my budget, uses of it and level?
If you have any better lens suggestions for me, please say! Thanks!

Need feedback on photography?
I'm relatively new to the 'photography scene', i.e. half a year or so. I know I'd never bother to lug around a heavy DSLR so I picked a mirrorless camera (Nikon V1) as my choice. I've kinda picked out some of the better photos I've on flickr, representative of several genres and my optimal (I guess) level of photography?
Are they alright? If not, feel free to explain what changes I could make either during or post-photography? Thanks for your time.

1) Hmm yeah I can see how that's possibly distracting.
2) Haha yea I always seem to forget I've hands.
3) Yeah I precisely chose the composition because I felt the sky lent as much weight to the scene as the autumn scenery.
4) Ooh okay.
5) Yeah I think I undersharpened (by default I leave sharpening to zero for raw files).
6)Haha no I was just testing out lowlight capabilities of the V1 in a public aquarium setting.
Thanks for being so detailed, it really helps to have outsider opinion (don't think judging my own photos would be reliable).

The thing is, with the fountain tilt that both of you have mentioned, the base of it along the 'treeline' is actually straight. If I tilt to make the fountain straight, that would be slanted instead. Yeah I should prob have cropped the scene, just thought it'd lend more colour to the owl.As for the fish hahaha it was actually intended! I named the photo 'Outcast' on flickr!

Photography help. Canon Rebel T3?
I have a Canon Rebel T3 1100D.Is it possible to have the camera connected to a laptop/pc (with windows) through the USB cord that came with the camera and view the photos as I shoot them?
I was able to do this with a Nikon, but when I try with my Rebel, the camera flashes "busy" in teh viewfinder when i go to focus my subject and it wont even allow me to focus the lens.It allows me to take a photo while the USB is connected but I have the SD card removed. And this does me no good, because the photo isn't actually saved and it doesn't show up on my laptop.
I can however, unplug one end of the USB cord, take the photo, plug the USB back in, and the photo then shows up. And then, I still have to manually double click the file folder to open just to see what i've shot. C'mon. There has to be an easier way, but I'm at a loss.
Help!

URGENT! IS THIS A BAD IDEA?
Hi, okay. I am going to a concert and I have no other camera but a DSLR, which are not allowed in concerts and I really want to take good pictures with a good quality point and shoot camera. I am 16, VERY tight on money & I was wondering if I should sell my Nikon D5100 DSLR for a Canon PowerShot SX50. All I ever did with my DSLR was take pictures (not professionally). And make YouTube videos. I also plan on going to more concerts in the future. AND I'm not liking my Nikon DSLR. I want to save up for a Canon DSLR. Would this be a bad idea?
