Why is Nikon video poorer in quality than Canon?

I was recently helping a guy get some better camera angles at a live performance in a record store, and I have a Nikon d5100 and he has a Canon crop-sensor camera, but I can't remember what it was called. There was not a lot of light available. He had an 85mm 2.0 and I had a 35mm 1, 8. We both shot at 30fps 1080p and similar exposure.

But his video looked almost perfectly clean while mine had noticeable noise. I don't know if he's going to be able to use it. Why is this the case for video? According to DXOmark, the Nikon d5100 has the best low light ISO capability of any APS-C camera except 1 Pentax one and most of the Canon ones are much less capable, so it must be exclusively a video thing.

50mm f1.8 AF lens compatible with autofocusing on Nikon 5100?

Hi I was wondering if the Nikon 50mm f 1.8 AF lens will auto focus on the Nikon 5100. I saw on a review that you had to manually focus, but on a different one it said it would autofocus. Just wanted to clarify! Thanks!

I am coming to San Francisco in January and hope to take a bunch of photos of the Golden Gate Bridge.My question - where are some of the best locations to photograph the bridge? Even if they are a little off the beaten path - I am ok with that. I am from Illinois and love bridges. This may be my only opportunity to catch some photos of it. Also, any lens suggestions? I have a Nikon D5100 that I will be bringing with.

Nikon 18-200 vr2 or tamron 10-20 and tamron 28-75?

I have a Nikon 18-200 vr2
I just bought a 70-200 vr and it it much better than the 18-200
I wanted to know from anyone who has the lenses,
Is it worth it to sell my 18-200 vr2 and buy a tamron 10-20 and a tamron 28-75.
The 28-75 is a 2.8 so it is better than the nikon 18-200, and the 10-20 has a -8mm wider angle than the nikon so it will be better for landscape and wide angle.
I cant afford the Nikon 12-24 and 24-70 lenses because they are almost $2000 each.

Camera videos lose audio when transferred to laptop?

I've taken some videos with my camera (a Nikon D3100). When I transferred them to my laptop (an Asus… something) and tried to play them, there was no audio. I tried opening in multiple programs, but it didn't make a difference. I've moved videos from the camera to the laptop before, and it was fine.

I tried a Google search for a solution, and got a few different Nikon- and photography-related forums and help pages. They all say to download an updated codec. I found a rather recently updated one (from September of this year) and attempted to download it. When it began to install, a notification popped up that said a newer codec was detected on my computer, so the installation stopped.

The videos are pretty big files, because they're kind of long. Would that have anything to do with it?

And I'm going to repeat a very important piece of info here: I already tried downloading a codec and it said it was up-to-date. I know someone's going to answer this and just say "Get a new codec." and think they're being incredibly helpful. That sort of thing happens every time I ask a question.

Which 10x50 binocular to buy for Amateur star gazing / astronomy?

I am new to star gazing I have done some initial research for what binocular to buy. I am convinced that 10x50 porro prism binocular will do great fro me.
Now I am confused which binocular to buy.
I looked online, I found the following for consideration:
- Olympus 10x50 DPS I
- Nikon Action 10x50 CF
- Kenko Artos 10x50W

Olympus is costing 4.3K, Nikon 7.4K and Kenko for 8.7 K. I researched Olympus is having BAK7 prism that is why it is coming cheap.

My Budget is around 8, 000 Rs (roughly 150$).

I need some expert advice to which binocular to buy. If any other binocular is also good (and in my budget ;-) ), please tell me.

I recently purchased a windows 8 laptop. I also bought a nikon d5100 camera. I didn't think about windows 8 compatibility and apparently that could be an issue with the software.My question is, will the camera will soon be upgraded? Should I chance that Nikon will make it compatible or buy a Canon t3i. The t3i is $50 more and I really like what I've researched about the Nikon.My husband does have a window 7 computer that I could use if necessary.

I want to start photography (Not in a professional way, just for myself because I love it. ) I need a digital Camera but I don't need a super expensive super great camera.

Something easy to handle and the price matters. I prefer Canon personally, because I have worked with it before and I know it the best. But Nikon, Sony, … any mark, it really doesn't matter.

Also, I need it to take good pictures at night. I mostly want it to take pictures of nature.

Hello, I'm 15, bmxer, looking for a good, yet affordable fisheye w/o black corners. I would like to know about any high speed nikon lenses that would be best for filming. I only have a kit lens at the moment because I just bought my camera. I will be getting a 50mm f1.2 (Fx lens for portraiture) and a DX 50mm f1.4

How to do long exposure photography on a Nikon D5000?

I just decided to start doing photography, I know nothing about it but the type of photography that really caught my attention is the Long Exposure Photography. I got myself a Nikon D5000 and I'd like to know how to achieve a 30 second exposure night shot (which I believe is the one that's possible without having a tripod or a remote control - a hard surface and my finger is enough). This is what I have in mind to photograph:
-Buildings
-Bridges
-Stars
-Moonrise
-Sunset
Anything in dark conditions preferably, although I wouldn't mind doing day long exposure, if it's possible. Any answer is much appreciated, thank you in advance!

What video settings should I use to record ink droplets in water?

I am trying to film the movement of ink droplets in water as well as swirling colors dropped into milk and distored with dish soap. I am using a Nikon D5100. I am new to using my DSLR so i'm not exactly sure how I can get my camera to stay focused on the swirling ink. I had my settings as 'subject tracking AF' for AF-area mode and the focus mode on full-time-servo AF.it had a hard time focusing on the swirling ink as it changed directions.it would keep refocusing but it took a while for it to finally focus (thats if it even could) and i really don't want these blurry transitions in my video.

Can anyone please suggest how I can record this movement with a proper focus?

Both lens i found are 200 bucks on sale

i am worried that 50mm would have a tight field of view

im considering the 35mm too but not sure which one to go for.

I saw both at the store and the 50mm looks more up to date in terms of build and design but obviously it comes down to the photo.

my main reason for a prime lens is to shoot with blurred backgrounds, especially of friends and family during parties.

ive read mixed reviews online, howver it seemed the 35mm seems more " popular" but canon doesnt even have a 35mm prime.

what do you guys think?

Ok so i tried to do a multipl e exposure with my Nikon N55 and the whole roll ended up be rewound without even being completely used up.i held the correct button and went to click the shutter and that when it started to rewind the film instead of taking the photo.did i miss something here?

Alright, so i have a Nikon N55 35mm camera that i've been playing with. I was just reading about the N55 doing multiple exposures? Computer not downloading photos correctly from camera. Help?

Okay here is the thing. I have a Nikon D3100 which I've had for a year or so and I couldn't be happier with it but today when I went to load my latest photography onto my laptop (HP laptop) it only downloaded some.It downloaded half of the photos fine but the other half of them it didn't. They just came up as NEF File (.NEF) and had no information on them what so ever. I've never experienced this before and it's extremely frustrating. Could it be that I recently downloaded a printer to my computer so now the download process is different? Also just in case it helps I have a Sony card reader and a Kingston SD card. Please help?

A Canon T3i DSLR or a $500 camcorder, which is better for video?

I have heard a lot of great things about the T3i for shooting video, especially when compared to camcorders of a similar price range (~$500-600). Especially in regards to image quality and video and audio flexibility.

What is your impression? Is there a decent camcorder in that price range (or less) which is better for shooting video than the T3i?

Mind you, I mean BETTER, not "EASIER". I know the camcorders are more compact and more automated. I want something to create BETTER video, without getting into a semi-pro video camera (which costs MUCH more).

I want to separate the hype from the facts.

Also, if you know of a better DSLR for video than the T3i, also in the sub-$1000 market, say by Nikon or whatever, please feel free to recommend that, too.

Hi, I have a Nikon D5000 DSLR. While I love the camera, the lense that came with the camera (a 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6) is just okay and I'm looking to upgrade. I was looking at the "Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S ED VR II Nikkor Telephoto Zoom Lens", but I would like one that has a maximum aperture of f/2.8, since I do a lot of lowlight shooting.Is there a lense that has a smilar focal length range, but is a faster lense? Okay, well I am taking a photography class in school. For our semester project we are suppose to take 10 pictures that create a story/depict a story. I am just stuck and I don't know what to do!

Right im 15 and still would consider myself quite a novice in the camera department but i have a nikon D5100 and im really into macro photography and extreme close ups of things and before now I have been using macro filters that screw on which were good enough when I had my D40 but now I've upgraded im looking for a decent lens that will do the job and hopefully not be too expensive

I am looking to buy the 55-300mm Nikon Nikkor lens for my Nikon D5100.
I will mostly be using it for action shots of horses and sometimes other animals, not professionally, but i do want good, clear and un blurred pictures. But obviously need a lens with a good zoom because i can't always be as close as i need to be when photographing the animals.

Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 focus confirm chip?

Hi all.

I'm looking to purchase a Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 aspherical lens for use on my D300. The lens is offered with or without a focus confirm chip.My question is, does anyone know specifically what this chip does? I know even with my ancient 50mm f/1.8 E Series Nikon lens my D300 can confirm focus. Does this chip for the Rokinon allow for that on the D300? Or does it only help to aid the camera's auto-exposure function (shutter/aperture priority modes)? I'm hoping my D300 is advanced enough to confirm focus without the chip, which I would assume is geared towards entry level cameras. Still, I'm not sure.

Added (1). Thanks ace. Actually, the difference is about $40- I probably will end up going with the chip-inclusive version. But do you think the D300 will be able to confirm focus (green dot in bottom corner of viewfinder) without the chip? If so, I'd just as soon get it without the chip…

How to photograph a chocolate shop?

My friend has asked me to help him out by photographing his chocolate shop for his website.i'm only a keen amateur at the moment.i've been asked to help him as he has been given a deadline for monday the 3rd to get the pictures to the website designer and ther's not enough time or money to get a pro in. I know the basic do's and don'ts (e.g remove clutter from the picture etc.) but i could really do with some help to give me some other ideas. He wants me to photgraph things like chocolates that are un-boxed and also boxed goods aswell.any help really apreciated!

Nikon D80 Camera Flash Fault?

Suddenly my Nikon D80 digital SLR does not do flash anymore. The flash unit is built-in. If light levels are low the flash unit pops up, and a small white light shows (this is for auto-focusing I guess). But if the shutter programme shows a flash symbol the shutter will not activate. If the shutter programme does not show a flash symbol then the shutter activates as normal. I guess the flash bulb might have burnt out, or is there a secret setting that might turn the flash back on? Many thanks.

Hi, a few days ago when i was digging around i found a vivitar 1:3.8 macro lens and i attached it to my nikon d9.when i pressed the shutter button it would not shoot and it displayed f-- in the left bottom corner.i heard this came up when the lens could not communicate with the camera but this lens has not connection pins within it, so it is completely analog.Is there any setting i would need to change or anything i would need to do to make this camera shoot with this lens?

Nikon focusing. How it works?

I have a Sigma 100-300mm f4 but it has a focusing issue (not really a problem), when focusing it flickers minutely when focusing.It causes quite a few unfocused photos when I really needed them in focus. I shoot with a Nikon D5000 and so the lens focuses with the lens focusing motor as the Nikon D5000 does not have an in built focus motor.
My question is whether if I bought a Nikon D300 (inbuilt focus motor), would the sigma lens focus better.
Does the inbuilt focus motor over ride the lens focusing motor?

Best payment option for purchasing a Nikon Camera?

My boyfriend is trying to purchase a Nikon D3100 as a Christmas present for me. With Christmas being a month away, and the camera being so expensive, he just can't rack up the money -- money is tight right now. Which would be the best digital camera or camcorder to record classical music?

I'm trying to get ideas on which would be the best option to record classical music (small ensembles). Some people have suggested Sony bloggie or something similar from Kodak, but I'm not sure. While browsing through some cameras at bestbuy I found the Nikon J1, and the image is very sharp, but I couldn't record anything, so, still don't know! I would like to stay under $500. If someone could recommend a camcorder, digital camera or mic that would do a decent job, it will be highly appreciated!

Hi! Ill start out by saying im a very ametuer and new photographer. Idk if i can even call myself that lol. Well i purchases my nikon d3200 about 3mo ago. I have totally fallen in love with the art! Do i need to print up a contract? What should it say? Ive founs myself with 3 people waiting for me to get back to them with details about pricing time length and number of pictures. Most people in my area charge $50 for an hour and around 30 photos on a cd. Not many people do prints. I would be interested in having a package for printing. Pleaseee helpppp im so confused idk how i got here!!!

How much do megapixels matter?

Hello, i am stuck between the canon rebel t4i and the nikon d3200. The nikon has 24 megapixels, whilst the t4i has 18. I have a retina display macbook pro and i will be wanting to take pictures up to 2880x1800 in size. Can the t4i handle this? I like everything else about the t4i. I will be shooting pictures of nature and also taking video. Can you explain how many megapixels i need and what they do? Will i be able to take 2880x1800 pics with the t4i? My Nikon D5000 delays in taking pictures?

I am an Ametuer photographer, and I have a Nikon D5000, I've had it for about 2 years now, and it seems that when I'm taking pictures it takes a long time for the camera to actually take. I'm getting frustrated with my camera because I've missed SO many great facial expressions and perfect moments because my camera wouldn't take the picture. How to keep polycarbonate lenses clean?

No matter how hard i try they get so dirty so quick.they weren't cheap lenses either they were 200$. i clean them with the cleaning cloth they give me i still cant get them clean 100%. i run them under water and clean them but then they get dirty immediately. and they take forever to clean.i used to have nikon glass lenses and they cleaned up like a charm, run them under hot water and wipe them off and they were good.any ideas

Is this depth of field?

I used my aunts really nice lens yesterday, and loved the results I got. Example:

They were taken with a Canon(not sure what model) and a 70-200 lens. What I really love about these is the way the background is so blurred out.Is this what depth of field is?

My new lens(the Nikkor 18-200mm VR) should be here within a week, and I'm wondering if the lens I'm getting is capable of making the backgrounds of my pictures like the ones I linked to above.My old lens(the standard kit lens) never did this for me.

So, is this depth of field? And how do I get results like that with my new lens - if possible?

How macro is the nikon 40mm f/2.8 lens really?

It supposively focuses at 6 inches, but I tested my 18-55 mm kit lens at 40 mm and it seems to focus around 6 in from the subject as well, but in no ways do I see it as a micro lens. How could this lens be macro if it focuses at the same focal length that my kit lens does?

How to get chrispy pictures in low light with Nikon J1?

Whenever i take pictures with my Nikon J1 in low light, they always end up kindof blurry.for and example, i was taking a picture of my sister and my cat by the fire, and i turned out blurry, even though there was afternoon light.
Do I really have to use a tripod all the time, or can i use some other settings? I'm kinda new with this, and i have'nt changed any of the standard settings on the camera.

Canon 60d and the nikon d7000?

Well i see that the Canon 60d has a burst rate of 5.3fps and the d7000 has 6fps. Now is that alot of difference? Im merging into sports photography and want either of these cameras.because the nikon has 0.7fps more than the canon, does that mean that then nikon is better for shooting sports photography (Football)(UK) or is there other things that will make a camera shoot nice crisp pictures when things are moving? that i don't know about and have to look out for.

Was the 16-85mm a wise purchase in addition to the 18-105?

My parents recently bought the Nikon D7000 with the 18-105 kit lens online. (I know most say that it's a better idea to simply buy the body and skip the kit lens, which tends to have lesser quality, but the body and the entire set were both the same price.) This will be our first digital SLR, although we do have experience with film and point and shoots.
I tried to do some research online about which zoom lenses to buy in addition to the kit lens and on a Flickr forum many people said they used their 16-85 most often when leaving the house. We decided to order this lens as well but now I'm not so sure if it was necessary. The 18-105 has the same aperture range (f/3.5-5.6) and it offers a slightly larger zoom range. A comparison between the 16-85 and 18-200 on Ken Rockwell's website revealed there wasn't a whole lot of difference between the 16mm and 18mm wide angles. I realize the kit lens is made of a plastic mount, and the quality of its materials is cheaper, but is there a recognizable difference in quality in the photos produced by the 16-85 and 18-105?
It just seems to me that the 16-85 is simply a more convenient, condensed version of the 18-105 lens--am I mistaken?
Hmph this question ended up longer than I thought it would be but basically, I'm wondering if my parents' money was well-spent on the 16-85 or if it should be exchanged for another lens with a similarly versatile range but a larger aperture.

I had a baby in April so for Christmas I wanted to make photo books for all my family members through Shutterfly. I just created a 12x12 book online and I'm a little worried. Before I go and purchase $150 worth of these, I want to get others' opinions. I have pictures on there from a variety of different things (droid x, droid razr maxx, sony dch-10, nikon d90, nikon d3100 and nikon d3500) I tried to get all the pictures from my phone to be smaller in the book so they wouldn't be too bad, but looking at the pictures from even the nikons they look a little blurry or pixelated when I preview it.Is this normal? I just dont want to pay $150 and have crappy looking pictures. I'm looking at all the pictures on my memory card and they look perfect.Is it just because of their website or something?

I'm interested in shooting in the RAW mode on my Nikon D50 now that I'm finally getting a good lens. Can you tell me… What are the advantages of shooting in RAW? Need tips for taking good low-light pictures with a nikon d3200?

I recently bought a Nikon D3200 and am currently new to the photography world. I was experiencing the camera in different light situations but when I came to a low light area or room, the pictures would come out: 1- brighter than what I wanted it to be, taking out the dramatic low light I wanted and 2- came out all grainy with a lot of noise.So how do I set the apertures and shutter speed and modes? Or should I change the camera??? Because I wanted dramatic low light pictures taken w/o flash so any tips to shooting those kinds of images would be grand.

Sorry. I wasn't sure what section to put it in.

I accidently broke my $300 Nikon camera.My parents bought me the camera for my birthday during the Summer.
I was swinging the camera around & walking downtown to take pictures for my photography class, & I didn't realize that I was walking past a garbage can, when I hit it w/ the camera screen. The damage on the screen is the size of a dime, but now the screen doesn't function properly. Half of the screen is white & black & doesn't show the image, while the rest of the screen works just fine.

We got the camera from Costco & it's been 3 days past the 90 day warranty. Soo I can't return it to Costco & I'm pretty sure Nikon won't replace it since I damaged it on personal use. Now I feel bad, clumsy, & stupid. I don't think I want to ask anything for Christmas since it was my fault. I think instead I'll just give my parents the rest of my money instead to pay them back. Nikon would FIX the camera w/ me paying if it's fixable, right? My cameras never broke before, so I'm not sure on how it works.

My Camera Lens is stuck! - 1

I'm using a Nikon D3100 with the Nikkor 50mm 1.8d lens, and the lens won't come off the body!

I don't know if I just got a faulty lens, or if I'm doing something wrong, but I'm removing it in the same way that I've done with all of my other lenses: pressing down the release button and twisting in the direction that brings the two white dots together. I've been trying to get it off for days, and I've been very careful not to pull or grip it too hard.
It just won't let go! What do I do?

I am using my Nikon F70 (35ml film camera) and I want to take a continuous fast shot… I have been playing around with it and researching and have found that if i make the shutter speed faster it will obviously shoot faster! but as the shutter will be open for a shorter time there will be less light for the camera so i am wondering if i need to lower the aperture and make the aperture "whole" bigger so more light goes in? I just need some guidance on the whole issue… i have it current set on a shot speed of 100/1 so 100th of a second and it shoots fast! im just wondering what the aperture should be at and whether it would get good photos? any advice on the matter would help lots! thansk

I have a Mac OS X snow leopard and a Nikon 1. I want to connect my Nikon 1 to my Mac, and use it as though it is a webcam, and film, so i can see what is being filmed on my mac screen, as it would be on the screen on the nikon, if u get what i mean. What kind of material is this plastic?

This camera has a different front plastic material than the usual rub over it and leave a finger print on it plastic. Heres the camera, I dont knw if you can see it from the picture

D3000 SD card says its full but i deleted all photos!

Hi i have a nikon D3000 and i took out my SD card and inserted it into my Mac.after i saved all the photos to my Mac i deleted them.when i put the SD card back into my camera it said CARD IS FULL. when i tried to go back to view the photos on my camera it says FOLDER CONTAINS NO IMAGINES.so whats going on? how can i fix it? can i even fix it? thank you

Why won't my Nikon D5000 take pictures?

A few weeks ago, my camera started to seize up occasionally -- it would focus and expose, but no picture was written to my SD card. This lasted for a few minutes, during which time I would turn the camera off, remove the battery, the lens, the SD card, and do any other random thing I could think of to fix it, but the camera always seemed to right itself. Yesterday though, the camera just stopped taking pictures entirely.It functions normally in everything except that the LCD screen won't show me what's visible through the viewfinder, though it still works to review pictures I've already taken and display camera settings. I've tried resetting the camera and replacing the SD card, but it still doesn't work. I have a photo assignment due for school which I've got to start work on, and I'd be crazy grateful to anyone who could give me any advice or input on what the heck is going on with my poor little camera.

For thing I know is that the camera's that we use is totally different than the ones that movie people use to click a poster picture - but I am wondering what are those cameras that have the capability of clicking a poster size picture. I been told the nikon d7000 would be a good investment for my $. However, I want to know what makes that camera better than the latest d5200 & d3200? is it the value cost? The d7000 released in 09 I believe and there's rumor that the newest d7100 is bound the release sometime soon. Should I wait? My budget is tight, and I been consistently acknowledged by fellow peers and online experts that the body of the camera doesn't matter, but the lens. Nikon 5100 How to Zoom?

We just bought a Nikon 5100 and cannot figure out the zoom. We know how to manually turn the lens to zoom in, but it doesn't make the object close at all.My old camera zoomed in much closer. What am I doing wrong?

Added (1). Thankfully, it wasn't $800. We got it for our kids at sporting and school events. The salesman completely misrepresented it, I guess. I told him we needed something that would make the kids appear much closer to us than my old camera.

Nikon D5100 with SB-24?

The built-in flash is firing when a flash unit SB-24 is attached on my Nikon D5100.
But on page 202 of reference manual (D5100) they said "The built-in flash will not fire when an optional flash unit is attached".
What I'm doing wrong? Is there any issue to take into account this situation?

So I'm having trouble deciding what DSLR I want to buy. I've taken plenty of photography classes, and read plenty of books and used plenty of DSLR's for events, classes & more. But I'm ready for a step-up from an entry level DSLR. I enjoy taking portraits and shooting mainly people, events, and occasionally landscapes. I want to buy my first DSLR. Every other DSLR I've used was school owned, or a friend's. But I have plenty of knowledge. I know I want a camera that works pretty well in low light. I would like faster burst mode rates- I don't care for any of the extras like swiveling lcd's or any of that. I want it to have a decent battery life. Full HD video is preferred, resolution is kind of a big buying point as I will be printing and enlarging photos and would like them to turn out crisp, not softened or blurred at all. Basically I would like suggestions on any mid-level DSLR's from Nikon, Canon, or Sony. Please share experiences with your own mid-level dslr's if you can! Pricing doesn't matter.

Need help with capturing photos of American Bald Eagles?

My dad wanted to know what is the best setting for taking photo of these eagles down at MD. He said the photos he took are kinda blurry. He has a Nikon D800 with the AF 51point 3D setting on and some lens 500… which i fail to understand (i am clueless when it comes to camera). Nikon wide angle lens suggestions?

Hi all. I'm looking for a wide-angle lens for my Nikon D300. I'm torn between a fast prime, such as the 24mm f/2.8D and a newer 18-55mm VR zoom. I'm very much a fan of the sharpness, clarity and good low-light performance one can get from a prime. However, I'm largely used to shooting with a D60 and/or D200.In the past year I've upgraded to a D300 and all I've shot with was a 50mm f/1.8. The first DSLR I had (D60) came with the 18-55mm VR in a kit.At the time, I generally liked the lens, but I remember having very little freedom to crop my images, without noticing a significant loss of sharpness. I sold that to get my D200 almost two years ago.

I'd like to get a wider lens, preferably something in Nikon's D or G series. I can't afford a fast, professional zoom such as the 24-70 f/2.8 or 17-55 f/2.8. I understand the 18-55mm would be much more versatile, but I've come to be somewhat of a nitpicker for great clarity and sharpness straight out of camera, has anyone used this lens with the D300? I only base my experiences on using it with a D60 with (somewhat) poorer ISO performance than the D300.

Suggestions?

EOS Canon T1i, T3, or Nikon D3100?

I have enough money to buy myself a good, decent, DSLR. I know these SLR's aren't entry-level anymore, but I just need a good starter. I just can't decide between these three because I have great offers.

Camera Problem Nikon D90?

I have a used Nikon D90 with a 10 or so year old 52mm Sigma auto focus lens. I just acquired the camera and I am trying to take pictures with it but whenever the center of the image becomes far away, the camera will not take the image. I can hear the motor in the lens trying to turn the focusing dial but its not moving. I just don't get it because I see the image in the viewfinder and I'm saying "take" but it just makes a little noise and doesn't do anything. I've tried it on the P, S, A, and M settings, which I don't think should matter.

I'm currently an art student studying sculpture. I'm wanting a camera both to document my artwork and to create process shots and videos. I recently discovered the gopro camera and it seems awesome for creating my process videos and attaching them at interesting angles, However it wouldn't be great for documenting my work. I can always rent a camera at my school for a couple days at a time, and its an expensive one with nice lenses -somthing I couldn't afford myself anyways and would take better shots. I decided to do a video with me and friends and I looked HORRIBLE! My face looked washed out, my nose looked bigger than what it is, my eyes appear smaller and I look 10X my age.Is this how I really look? I look BAD in certain lighting, but all my friends appear the same. I DO NOT like what I see, and now my self-esteem is SHOT! PLEASE HELP!!! Guys don't really approach me in real life and one girl called me ugly before, I came to the realization that maybe I am. I am underweight though, and I think on video it just makes me look MORE sickly than what I look like in real life.

I use a NIKON 5X OPTICAL ZOOM 6.3-31.5mm camera. What does that mean?
