Aperture priority mode producing underexposed photos?

it's a nikon d40 and for some reason when I try to switch to Auto ISO it tells me it can't be used with the current settings, though I know it can. Trying to shoot outside in natural overcast sunlight so I set the ISO to 400 but no matter whether I try a small or large aperture the photos keep coming out nearly pitch black.

It's for a class assignment where we are supposed to use both a small and large aperture to compare depth of field using aperture priority mode, and i really can't figure out why it isn't working

Someone was taking pictures of my home- should I be concerned?

My boyfriend was waking by our front door and noticed a car parked in the middle of the road, taking pictures of our home. When he opened the door to go ask them what they were doing, they drove off. He said the driver was an older man and there was a passenger he couldn't see from the house. He said the car was older and not very well kept, but the camera was a big, expensive looking Nikon. I'm not sure if I should be alarmed. We have owned our house for over a year now. It is a fairly small house, with little aesthetic value. We also in a small town (6,000 people) and our neighborhood is on the less nice side of the town. There are a few abandoned homes nearby. I can't think of a reason anyone would want to take pictures of our home. There should be no reason to take pictures for appraisal, and it isn't much to see (very plain, no decor, and the yard is is muddy and slushy with the weather.) I know it isn't illegal to take pictures of someone's house, but should I be concerned about this? We drove around after and did not see any similar cars taking pictures of any other homes. Thank you in advance for your answers.

Guide me to buying my first dslr or mirrorless camera?

Hi guys I'm going to buy my first dslr or mirrorless camera and I am going to be very specific on what I'm looking for so you guys can help me decide on which one to get.

What I'm going to use it for:
Landscape/City
Not really going to do videos.

Features I'm looking for
Built-in Wifi (mandatory) (or eyefi compatible)
Weatherproof(kinda optional)
Image Stabilization (optional)
Compact(I can handle weight, just don't want it to be bulky)

Cameras I've been searching up
Mirrorless:
Olympus e-m5 or e-m5 mark ii
Olympus e-m10 or e-m10 mark ii
Sony a6000

DSLR:
Pentax K50
Pentax KS2
Pentax K3-II
Canon t5i or t6i
Nikon D5300 or D5500(but this is kinda too bulky for me)

Feel free to add more that would be suited for me.

Now I know lens is just as important as the body. The kind of lens that captured my interest are the wide angle lens. Any suggestions for those are much appreciated. I think I saw a cheap one(Rokinon 12mm f2.0)

Price range:
I don't mind using second-hand so I don't think price is an issue.

Any opinion/comment is appreciated.

Thanks
John

Bring camera while snowboarding?

I'm going snowboarding and I want to bring my Nikon d5500. I've snowboard a couple times so I probably won't fall a lot but I'm still worried because I just bought the camera for my birthday. How do I reduse the risk of breaking it? I'm thinking of putting it in a small backpack but if I fall I feel like it would break because the backpack is small and thin.

Canon t5i, Nikon D5300, or Pentax K50?

Upon researching brands and models for a beginner dslr. I came up with Canon t5i, Nikon D5300, and Pentax K50. I need help deciding which one to get. Out of the three, I'm leaning towards Pentax cause its cheaper and weather-proof but it only has 16 MP. Does MP even matter in dslr?

My second choice is the Canon t5i is the fully articulated display, has 2 more MP than Pentax and Canon is a trusted brand.

As for what I'm going to use it for:
Mainly pictures of landscapes, portraits, etc. Not really into videos yet.

So please help me make a decision.

Fast shooting lens for Nikon D7200?

Hi I'm upgrading from a D5100 to a D7200, I've been photographing for about 5 years. I would say my experience is intermediate, although I don't know a whole lot about lenses. I really only take photos of trains, this requires a lot out of a lens. I've been using the Nikkor 18-140mm lens for a few years now and I notice it doesn't focus as fast as I need it too. The way I usually shoot trains going by is I zoom in to around 50mm or so and as the train comes closer I zoom out with the train keeping it in the frame till it passes. This requires me to constanly keep pressing the shutter to "re-focus" the lens so it can keep the train in focus as I zoom out wider as it comes closer. With the current setup I have now (D5100+that lens) when I'm doing that sometime it just does not focus in time and I miss the shot. I've missed many of nice shots because of this. Among other upgrades the one I want most with the D7200 when i get it in a few weeks is quicker focusing. Will this be greatly improved with the D7200? Or is it the lens? Advice? Thank you.

Which is better for point and shoot, Nikon or Canon?

Particularly, I am looking at Canon PowerShot SX260 HS 12.1MP Digital Camera with 20x Optical Zoom and Nikon S8200 16.1MP Digital Camera with 14x Optical Zoom. The Nikon is cheaper (by $30), and it has a better MP; Canon has more zoom capabilities. I am not sure if zoom or mp is better when choosing a point and shoot, or which brand is better for this type of camera. What I want to do with the camera is take pictures when traveling (mainly) in addition to pictures of people. Thank you!

How to use RawTherapee to get my RAW (NEF) pictures to a decent state?

As below, the preview shows a great photo (looks like the processed JPEG from the camera) but after I double click to edit, it goes to the "raw" image which is washed out and I can't seem to get it back to the "nice" image of the thumbnail.
Added (1). I guess I can only show one photo… But you can see the nice thumbnail of the far right image… As soon as I double click it becomes washed out and I don't know how to get back to the nice preview or how to get the nice preview to show up in the large screen (these are all NEF files).
Added (2). I'm very new to post-processing images (pre-beginner, if you will). Clearly RawTherapee can process the images to a "base" (as seen in the thumbnails)… I can modify that "base" image to change it as I like, but my problem is that I don't know how to take a completely raw image (which is what it seems to be giving me once I choose it) to a reasonable one. What camera should a noob like me get?

SHORT VERSION:
I m willing to try any of the following:
- Pentax Q-S1
- Canon EOS1100D
- Nikon D3200

I m mostly in to taking:
- Macro shots
- Landscape
- Portrait

Note:
- Limited choices are due to my budget limit
- I would like to start taking nice raw photos via Manual settings

LONG VERSION:

To start off, I wanted to take awesome shots. I just take photos from my phone (Sony Xperia Z1 then the Z3+. I even considered getting a DSC-QX100 before but the cost is too much for me!) so, going back, I started to feel like it s not enough. Don t get me wrong though, I ve gotten compliments for the photos I take. As I progress, I felt the need to step it up a bit. (i honestly do not prefer a digicam)

I ve always wanted to get myself an entry level DSLR, but I prefer something within the budget. I saw the Pentax Q-S1 (I know, it s not a dslr, BUT IT S CUTE!) and have seen and read good photos and reviews about it (I m considering it because of its interchangeable lens and quality. Im literally a noob, so I cant really base this on specs)

On the other hand, I was able to have seen some DSLRs which levels within my budget: Canon EOS1100D and Nikon D3200. (As much as I wanted to get a Canon 100D, it s over my budget. And I m a girl, so, I m kind of into the smaller stuff)

I just wanted to start appreciating my raw photos as is, basically.

I would appreciate any insight:)

Can you please explain Exposure to me?

I took several photos in the snow and the exposure adjusted appropriately. I practiced inside and got this. I'm so confused. Is this accounted to the light emitting from outside into a darker room? And please explain this to me like you're talking to an elementary school student. I mean, really put it into laymen's terms. Visuals and demonstrations always help.

Here are my photos:
https://goo.gl/LHnH6m
https://goo.gl/VuXZyj
https://goo.gl/fvhvsC

Camera: Nikon D3200
Manual setting
Regular lens

And before you suggest adjusting my settings, I know how to adjust settings. I'd like an explanation on how Exposure works!

In the photo with Exposure +5, the meter is reading that the light is low-- so the window light is bright, the exposure is high, the image comes out bright, but the meter is reading that the light is low. Does a higher Exposure necessarily mean that the image will be brighter? It seems more logical for the meter to read on the brighter scale if the camera is producing a bright photo with high Exposure.

With -5 Exposure, how is the meter registering to the light of the window but producing a dark photo? Why is that?

How to stop my videos from being bad quality?

I've recently just purchased a Nikon D5200, mainly for the purpose of filming, as I am studying film at A level. I recently submitted a short film, but was disappointed with how bad the quality was of the video. Will digital slr lenses work on film cameras if you use Manual focus?

Help! I signed up for a Photography class and my Professor wants us to only use film cameras. I bought a Nikon N8008 body on ebay because I thought I could still use all of my nikor lenses for my digital slr and just use manual focus. However my viewfinder will not focus. I don t know if it s because my lenses are only compatible with a digital camera or if there s something wrong with the film camera. Buying my first super 8 camera?

Buying my first super 8 camera… Option #1 is a Elmo 600SD in excellent working order with a 8.5-50mm lens. It comes with a case and a crap load of accessories (2 mics, light, all manuals, ear piece, cables, etc.) for $35.00 plus $22.45 shipping. #2 is a Nikon Super zoom 8 with the 7.5-60mm lens with case and instructions for $45.00 free shipping and the statement "minimal testing done, as is". Option #3 is a Canon 814 w/ a 7.5-60mm lens camera only, working $59.99 + $20.99 shipping. Option #4 is a Canon 514XL with film and accessories and case, again the 7.5-70mm lens working, good condition in auction starting at $9.99 (but could go way up the last day) and $29.99 shipping. Option #5 is another Nikon like the first on I mentioned, says working auction for $25.00 (again, could or will go way up by end) and $20.00 shipping. I like the idea of having the versitility of the 60 or 70mm lens, but the Elmo looks like the best deal here. What do you think?

How to fix a camera lens with water in it?

I have recently, way too recently, bought a digital camera (Nikon S7000) and got water into the lens.

I don t mean dropped the camera into water, but when I went outside in the snow to take photos yesterday I slipped and a bit of snow went on the lens.

I have wiped this off with a lens wipe and the outer lens looks clean, with no smudges, but when I try to take photos they are blurry.

Could the water/snow have gotten into another layer of lens or something?
And how can I fix it? Does it need to be sent a pro or do I need a replacement?

As you can tell I am not at all a camera expert, I know nothing about cameras, so any help is appreciated.
Thanks.

Nikon 70-200 f2.8 VR vs Tamron 70-200 f2.8 VC?

I can't seem to decide between the Nikon 70-200 f2.8 VR (first version, not the newer VR II one) or the Tamron 70-200 VC (newer version, not the older macro one).

I understand that the older Nikon 70-200 f2.8 vr has terrible corners on FX, but that is not a bother to me, as corners don't matter to me in my field of work.

They are both weathersealed but the Nikon has the focus ring in front of the zoom ring, which I prefer. The Nikon one is also a $1490, while the Tamron is $1390, both quite close.

Yes, I am aware of the 80-200, but I feel there is a need for stabilization, especially at the 200mm end. The 70-200 f4 is too slow for my needs.

Quite torn on which one to get!

How much should I sell my Nikon D7200 (w/18-140 lens) for?

Im thinking about selling my Nikon D7200 with an 18-140 kit lens included. I paid roughly $1800 for it, during a boxing day sale this year. I bought the camera in early December and I've used it a fair bit since then. I've taken very good care of the camera and it's in excellent condition. I thinking of selling it to help pay for my tuition this semester, so I'll need to be able to get a reasonable, but good price for it.

Does this make any sense?

I've upgraded from dx to fx, including going from the Nikon D7100 to the D750, freaking awesome camera!

Anyway, the specs said that the 750 had nearly the same
Burst rate as the 7100, about 6.5 fps

Well, I'm getting Way more than that. I put it on continuous high, hold the shutter button and get off a good 12 shots in rapid machine gun succession before the camera slows down.

Same sandisk extreme sd card as well

I put the same sd card in the 7100 and nowhere near as good

So, what's the deal?

Nooooo, I'm not complaining, lol just the opposite, but I'm just wondering what else could explain this?

Size: I'm a small person (5'3 at 120 lbs) so one of my biggest concerns with shopping for these bags is getting my spine crushed. I have a Nikon camera, 4 lenses, and a tripod. I would very much like to be able to fit a Macbook in the bag when needed, and other things like snacks/sunblock. But I can't deal with a behemoth bag. I'd like something with good structure so it doesn't hurt my back while hiking.

Functionality: I need the best in water resistant materials. I'd rather pay $400 for a bag once than replace thousands of dollars worth of gear. I'm not careless with my gear in the least bit, but I don't want to take chances. I love how the Lowepro Dryzone 200 even FLOATS, but that goes back to my first concern of being too much of a burden to carry. I need something that will last and doesn't scream "I'm full of $$$" (another reason why I lost interest in Lowepro Dryzone 200).

The one I'm currently looking at is Whistler BP 350 AW by Lowepro.
http://store.lowepro.com/whistler-bp-350-aw
It looks pretty good (size-wise), but I'm not sure it's as watertight as I need…

Messenger bag recommendations? 1x dslr w/lens attached, 1x lens, 1x flash?

Hi,

Any recommendations for a shoulder bag (messenger-type) that's small but can fit:

1x pro-size dslr (Nikon D750 with battery grip) with an attached medium sized zoom
1x extra medium sized zoom
1x flash

And a pocket to fit documents.

I've been looking at the ThinkTank Retrospective 7 http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/859431-REG/Think_Tank_749_Retrospective_7_Shoulder_Bag.html but it's expensive.

Thank you!

Safe to shoot non-weathersealed lens during snowfall?

Hi,

My dslr is weathersealed but my lens is NOT weathersealed.

Outside, there are heavy winds and lots of snow, so there's snow hovering around in all directions. Can I safely shoot my setup outside (ground level, just environment portraits) with no damage to the lens and body? I'm not sure if I'm being overly cautious.

How about if there was minimal wind but just some snow falling? I would rather ask for input rather than assume.

For reference:
dslr: Nikon D750
lens: Zeiss 28mm f/2

Thank you!

Why did USSR cameras NOT have a meter embedded unto the camera?

There's the Zenit E, which isn't coupled with the camera.

Meter is attached on top (selenium) and then external readings.

Why didn't they have automated CDS meters in the 80s?

Nikkor 80-200mm 2.8 vs Nikkor 70-200 VR II?

I shoot mainly sports and candid street photography, I've already done my research on the 70-200 and I know it is clearly superior to the 80-200 but i don't know if I wanna spend double the price of the 80-200 for it. I can't find any good review anywhere about the 80-200 in comparison to the 70-200 or any other party lens sigma, tamron.

How to adjust a scope for longer ranges than it's main zero?

I finally decided on a scope for my AR build. I went for a Nikon Monarch 3 4-16 BDC. Now I will plan to zero it at 100 yards but questions about compensating at longer distances. I don't really use scopes save for my hunting rifle which is zeroed at 200 yards and it's.270win so it shoots flat already. Everything else is irons and EOTECH and red dots and I know those work in regard for compensating without having to adjust the elevation knobs.

I downloaded the nikon BDC app and it say for example " Set sights to shoot -3.04 inches low at 200 yards for a 100 yard zero" and "set sight to shoot -12.29 inches low at 300 yards for a 100 yard zero" and so on.

Does that mean if the scope is zeroed at 100 yards and the scope is made so each click is 1/4" at 100 yards would I change the elevation by 12 and 25 clicks UP respectively since the numbers are negative to have the scope zeroed in at the cross hairs at those ranges? Or am I misunderstanding those statements?
Added (1). If I am correct in what I think it is telling me just say it plainly.
Added (2). I should of put 49 clicks for 300 yards

Can you use different brand DSLR cameras when filming a movie>?

I am curious on lets say I am making a short film, and I am hiring camera operators 1.) Uses the newest Canon with its lenses 2.) Nikon with Prime lens and 3. A sony, or Black Magic. If you have different brands such as that shooting one scene, and shots so you can cover more angles will that affect the overall quality of the film, when it comes to post Production.

Or does it not matter long as you adjust the settings?

Buying a digital camera: DSLR vs Mirrorless, also tilt-shift advice?

I will be buying a camera soon and I am seeking advice.

I will be using the camera principally for my environmental work (observing field sites, macro shots of flowers and vegetation, landscapes, wildlife) but I also plan to eventually get into tilt-shift photography as a hobby.

I will be starting around the $500-750 CAD for just the camera.
I understand that mirrorless may be the future and I don t think I really need a viewfinder if the digital display is right there… Not too sure.

Also, I understand that true tilt-shift lens cost ~$2000, so I ll have to save and purchase one later and maybe use cheaper/adapter ones until then but the point is to have a camera that are compatible with tilt-shift lens (Canon EOS or Nikon F series?).

Could you provide a sensible startup package (including must-have lenses) from either Canon or Nikon that can provide my needs for environmental work AND be compatible with tilt-shift lenses?

Any other thoughts or considerations?
Thanks in advance!

Am I putting my new lens on my DSLR wrong?

It is a Nikon D7200 camera, with a Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 APO EX DG OS. Is this lens incompatible with my camera or am I just attaching the lens wrong? The lens looks too big for the camera body. Thanks!
Added (1). I feel silly now. It turns out the person who bought me the lens bought me one for a Canon camera!

Nikon Full Frame Obsolete?

With the introduction of the D500, is the D810 somewhat obsolete? The D7200 delivered DR and low light perf. Very close to the D810, and with the all new Expeed 5, is the D810 doomed? Maybe for certain landscape photographers, studio, etc, the D810 may be a better option, but for anyone else striving for best low light performance and other practical things besides that, AF, etc below D5 price on Nikon system, is full frame out of the picture? Thoughts?

Enthusiast point & shoot, or beginner DSLR?

At the moment, I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place trying to decide between a Canon Powershot G7X, and a Nikon D3200. I understand that the DSLR will probably take better photos than the point & shoot, but I prefer the size of the point & shoot, and I won't need to worry about spending loads of cash on lenses if I get the point & shoot.

Best Softbox Kit for Portrait Photography?

I'm looking into eventually purchasing a softbox kit for my photography business. I'm new with lighting kits but it's something I want to get into. I shadowed another photographer who owns one and I really liked his softbox kit compared to the old style umbrella continuous lighting kits. I want to find a kit where instead of having continous light, the softbox lights are only activated every time the shutter releases on my camera. What are some kits that are fairly cheap? I use a Nikon DSLR camera

Best lens for wide angle fashion shoot?

My sister is starting her fashion label. She wants to do a editorial shoot in the forest. There are a lot of bush tracks in our area but because it is hilly here there aren't big open spaces to play around with. We are restricted to tracks with a bank on one side and drop off the other side, with beautiful trees on either side and a stream running below… Get the picture? So anyway, she wants shots of her models on the track and also down the bank a little (with very little space to step back and take the shot!) so we are needing a flexible wide lens. Also my camera is a Nikon with cropped sensor. Any suggestions?

About how much is this Nikon SLR camera worth?

I found this old camera lying around and I have no knowledge of film cameras and the year of the camera model is unclear upon inspection. All I know is that it is a Nikon FG in very good condition and it has a lens. Also if you could help me identify the year of the camera that should help me get an idea of how much it's worth because different years have various prices on eBay and Amazon.

SD card error message on Nikon D3300 and not recognized by any computer?

I recently got a Nikon D3300 along with a 64GB PNY SD card to go with for Christmas. However, just the other day, I turned on my camera and it gave me the error message: "Memory card cannot be used. Card may be damaged. Insert another card."
I had recently gone over to a friend's with the camera but I used it a few times there and it was fine. To me it seems like this happened out of the blue.
This card isn't even a month old and neither is the camera.
I'm worried I messed something up when I copied files to the desktop of my Wacom.
The computers I tried accessing the card with are a Toshiba Satellite C55 Series and a Wacom Cintiq Companion.

Help urgently needed with Nikon D7100 camera?!

I am in urgent need of anyone who can help me fix my camera in any way. I got the Nikon D7100 model last November (2014) for my birthday and it's served me brilliantly well. However, in the past month or so, I've noticed that the photos have become increasingly grainy, especially in sport mode and in low light. I have tried everything; cleaning the lens, changing the lens, cleaning the view finder, cleaning the monitor, cleaning the part where the lens clicks in, changed the exposure settings, everything I could think of but so far nothing has worked. I really want to progress with my photography and I have an Instagram account with over 5k followers, but if I have a non-working camera, I don't know what I'll do! Any help, big or small, is very much appreciated!

Ideas for creative portrait lenses?

I've been looking at getting a new lens and have really been enjoying a lot of portraiture. Realising this is the main style I would like to pursue, I thought a lens that would be suitable for this would be best, however, I wasn't just looking for an average lens as Ive already got a fairly decent one, I was thinking about some slightly more creative ones I suppose. I started thinking about this when I saw some of the lensbaby products which seemed to have a really nice effect for portraits and macro photography etc but I've heard mixed opinions when looking into it. Does anyone have any suggestions of a nice and quite versatile lens for a Nikon DSLR? Im not totally sure what I'm after so far so I'm open to suggestions. Thanks:D

Added (1). I've been doing a lot of research on starting a youtube channel and i do have the equipment- however, my camera that i'll be using is the dslr d3100 and it doesn't have a flip screen. This youtube uses a software that came with her camera on her mac so that she can look at her laptop screen while filming instead at directly at her camera even though she has a flip screen.
