How to trigger Britek PS-300H Studio Flash with Nikon D40 via sync cord?

I am using a Nikon D40 camera (with AS10 type flash adapter) to trigger my Britek PS-300 Studio Flash via a sync cord. When it is on manual the flash is not triggered. However, when the camera is placed on automatic the flash goes off every time. I try to shoot the cameras with the "pop up" down but after shooting a few photos it pops up (by itself) although the flash adapter and sync cord is connected.
How do I get the Britek PS-300H studio flash to fire every time on manual. I use camera settings of: 640 f5.6 and iso Auto. I tried several combinations of camera settings but none worked consistently well.

What Dslr to upgrade to from a sony a230?

I'm going to be graduating soon and i will be gettin about $500 or more and i plan on selling my sony a230 so i can upgrade my camera. I want to upgrade because of its size, battery, and some other things. I am leaning more towards a Canon or Nikon because i have owned a pentax and didn't find it very suiting. I tried out my uncles Canon EOS rebel (forget which one) and really liked it, having a button for each thing was very handy too instead of scrolling through a menu.

Any ideas as to what might suit me best
my price range is about 500-700 but a cheaper camera with more lenses will work too
(yes i know i'm picky)
Added (1). That is just what i know i will have, i will most likely have more just from some other things

Nikon D3200: which lens?

Nikon D3200: which lens?
Added (1). So I was planning on getting the Nikon D3200 with a 18-55mm VR II lens, my first ever DSLR,
but now I'm pondering whether I should get the D3200 with the standard kit lens for 360 euros, or look for an alternative. Will I be satisfied with the kit lens (Can it go really sharp?) and could I just drop the pics into lightroom (any examples of great unedited kit lens photos taken with the D3200 would be welcome), or should I get a 35mm, or 18-200mm, etc., pushing my budget beyond its original limit?
