How to fix my nikon D40?

where do I start? The shutter will only fire in maual mode. If I put it in auto focus mode, It will not fire at all. I have cleaned the contact, and it still doesn't work. It's not the lens because I have put the lens on my other camera and it works. It is a kit lens. I want to fix it just because. I don't want to send it to nikon for repairs. Where do I start?

Christmas gift help?

I'm a 15 year-old boy. I play piano, guitar, an like music. I have a macbook, nikon D3200, and iPhone 5s (all that I've bought myself from working). Im not sure what to ask for. I wanted an iPad but my parents said we don't have the money. I don't really think that i'd use an xbox (i kinda see it as a waste of time) , i might like it though. Idk if i should ask for a iPod because i already have an iPhone… If you think that i'd like an xbox please tell me some cool games and why, and if you think i could use an iPod, please tell why. And if you have any other ideas they will be much appreciated!

Explanation of Camera Lenses and lighting?

I recently purchased a Nikon D3300 and only have the lens it comes with, a 18-55mm. I'm able to take some good pics but I feel like I really need something to focus on. I really want to get something as small as the texture and detail on a rock or moss "hairs." Lower mm to higher mm is for range/distance so do I just need a lower mm or a special lens altogether?

I only use manual mode and plan to go to school for photography so I wanted some info on how lights should be used and what lights I should get/use. Outside lighting is fine now no matter how dark the day is so far but in an incandescent room I just can't get anything to show up even after playing around any tips other than using flash?

I'm open to any other info and advice I'm signing up in a few months and trying to get a head start. I really appreciate the help and time you took to read all this.

What 50mm lens do i need with my Nikon D3200?

What 50mm lens do i need with my Nikon D3200?
Added (1). I am a very new to photography and I am teaching myself through it all. I am looking into buying a 50mm lens for portraits mostly of children and whatnot. I don't want to spend gobs of money on it. But I was wondering which one would work best with my D3200. I have been reading that a lot of the lenses won't AF with my camera type. So I want to know which ones will? I def want the AF. And not sure of the difference between the 1.8D and the 1.8G. Any help would be great! Thanks!

A7 MkII as a full frame upgrade?

I do a lot of handheld indoor/low light photography (think concerts) as well as outdoor/landscape. I see that my crop-sensor camera suffers a lot when my ISO is cranked up… Most of my shots at ISO 3200 or above are unusable garbage. While I have a tripod and external flash, I cannot use these b/c they impede my mobility and aggravate people, respectively.

I'm drooling over the A7 MkII's 5-axis stabilization, and after playing with the original A7 in-store, I envy the assisted digital zoom when manual focusing. With my eyesight deteriorating because my day job requires me to sit in front of a monitor all day, it's really hard for me to use a viewfinder when in manual mode. I almost exclusively use auto-focus, but no AF works that great in the dark, which is why I really like the assisted digital zoom.

I probably won't be selling off my D7100, unless the A7 MkII proves to be more useful.

That said, I'd like some input before comitting $2k.

And on that note, is the kit lens that comes with the A7 MkII any decent?

I currently run on a Nikon D7100.
Added (1). I'm looking at the A7 MkII b/c of cost. For $2000 USD, that sounds like a great deal for a FF option w/ a kit lens.

I dream of getting a FF Canon, but that's at least $1000 more than I'm willing to spend.
