Any thoughts on a Nikon D40?

Hi! I'm a college student in the market for basically the cheapest dSLR I can find. I found a Nikon D40 online within my budget. I've read that it's basically the end of the foodchain as far as dSLRs go, but I've also read that even the worst dSLR is better than a regular Point and Shoot. Any recommendations?
Added (1). I've also found a refurbished Nikon D3000 within my range. Which would you recommend?

Is a Sigma lens compatible with a Nikon D50?

I have a Nikon D50 and was just given a Sigma ZOOM MASTER 1:3.5~4.5 35-70mm Multi-Coated lens. I was told that the lens would fit on my D50 body, but in attempting to attach it… well, it doesn't.

Is it meant to? Do I need to get something to fit it on there? Or is it not compatible at all?

The playback button on my Nikon D3100 won't work?

It just doesn't work. I looked at my settings, and most of the playback options are gray and when I try and click on them, it says that those options aren't available with my current settings. I have no idea what settings that is referring to.

What is the difference between a Nikon 1 and the Nikon D3200 camera?

I a complete beginner in DSLR cameras - never even used one. But I want to learn. I am wanting to buy my first DSLR camera - but can't figure out which one to buy. I like the Nikon 1 camera series because of it's design and some of the 'quirky' photography features. But the Nikon D3200 seems like a better entry level DSLR. I want to know if I will be able to do everything with the Nikon 1 camera that I could do with the D3200. If I bought the Nikon 1 what would I NOT be able to do with it.Is the Nikon 1 a DSLR. I don't want to start learning more and find I need to buy the D3200 at a later date.So to cut a long story short what is the difference between the 2 cameras? :/

Is getting a old slr worth it?

I'm currently looking at the Canon AE-1 and the Nikon FM. I'm 17 and used to use old film cameras when I was a kid up to when I was 13. I loved using those cameras and they were great. The only camera I use now is a point and shoot by Canon and I love adjusting the settings on it to get a good picture. Would it be worth it to get one of these old cameras. I only have a $200 budget and these cameras seem great. I could probably get them much cheaper on Ebay too. Would they be ideal for taking pictures outside or for learning how to use a slr? I plan on getting the pictures on a Dvd so I can upload them to my computer too.

SLR or point and shoot camera?

I'm studying abroad next semester and I'm looking for a camera to take with me. The size and weight isn't really important. I'm a camera novice, but what I'm concerned about is getting the biggest bang for my buck. I have a rather constricted budget (because I'm a poor college student), so if I sprung for an SLR, I would probably have to just stick with the kit lens. I've heard that there are cameras that are not DSLRs, but have most of the same features and capabilities, just with no interchangeable lenses. Since I probably couldn't afford other lenses anyway, what kind of cameras that fit that description are there? I've also found a Nikon D3100 within my price range. If I can't afford additional lenses, is that any better than some time of midrange camera? Anything helps! Thanks!
Added (1). My most prevalent question is whether the lowest level SLR (ie. Nikon D3100) is worth it with ONLY the kit lens.
