How to choose the perfect camera?

I've just moved from a flat Savannah, GA to mountainous TN. With this change and a better view, I'm looking for a new camera. The Nikon I have is great but I'd like more features like a higher definition, further zoom, and around $250.My highest is $400 but even that is pushing it. Interchangable lens would be great but that can be optional. Links would be appreciated + your own personal review/experience.
I'm looking more for nature, wildlife, and personal photography. All answers are welcome.

Hello, I have a question.

I have got a Olympus XZ-1 digital camera, and it is quite good for long exposure photography, but it has several problems. First, the image is a bit noisy even at ISO 100, and the second is, that I have a limited lens range. I was planning to buy a Nikon D5100 camera.Do you recommend getting the DSLR or just staying with the Olympus for now.

My SD card wipes out some pictures everytime I put it in the computer?

I have a Nikon D3000 and a 16gig SD card.
I took a bunch of pictures and then put the memory card into the computer to attach to emails and send to a friend. I didn't create copies, delete, cut or move a file. I safely ejected and inserted the memory card back in. Afterwards, Going through my pictures random ones are missing and there are quite a lot. Its happened to me before, but I never really made a big deal out of it.
I wanna know how and why these are lost and how I should recover them. Its happened on my computer and laptop, do you think its a virus?
Added (1). Haven't formatted it in a while.by doing so, what would happen?

Advice with filters for the Nikon d5100?

I found a kit from Hoya on amazon for $60 which includes the UV, Circular Polarizer and NDX8 filters, and I found an RM-72 Infrared filter from Hoya on amazon for $52. I would pretty much just be using them for experimentation, so is $110 really worth it? Or would cheaper Polaroid filters work just fine?

Okay so I'm going to buy my first dslr camera but I know nothing about photography and I'm trying to learn after getting the camera.So in a nutshell, I'm a beginner. I have looked through a few models and came down to these few and I can't decide!

1) canon 600D
2) canon 650D
3) canon 60D
4) Nikon D5100
5) Nikon D60

Emm so for the canon cameras, let's compare the 600 and 650D first. The shopkeeper told me that the only difference is that the 650 has touch screen and some focusing adjustment or something like that.So I'm thinking, since it's only some little things, and the price difference is quite a lot for me, should I cross out 650 from my list?

Then, let's compare the 600D and the 60D. Of course the 60D is so much better, but it's so much more expensive and it's for semi pros. Emm can a photography idiot like me handle that camera and make full use out of it? Is there a need to spend so much money? But someone told me that if I buy the 650D for beginners, I will eventually get bored out of it and need to upgrade my camera and suggested me to straight away go for the semi pro camera so I won't have to fork out another sum of money to buy another camera later on? Hooow?

Okay let's compare the nikons now. I actually like both of them and I don't know what to complain about them.It's just that the mega pixels is smaller if compared to canons, will that really affect much? Also, I like the d60 but my father's friend told him that it is not wise to buy that because it is already out of production and a newer camera will replace it soon? Bt if I wait for the new one, the price will be really high compadres to the old one right? Ughh so I really don't know.

OH BY THE WAY I'm sorry, when I say nikonD60, I'm actually not sure if the model I just saw was D90 or D60 (I forgot the number oops) but I do remember that it has a motor built in something like that and is quite heavy compare to other cameras.

SOOO, what do you think? Out of the 5, will you rank them from the first to the fifth in your list if you were to buy one now and you are a beginner with no real experience with cameras before.

Which Camera with Video should I choose?

I was looking into a DSLR camera for quite a while now and for now on top of my list are:
Canon D600, Nikon D5100 and Sony SLT-A65
All of them seem to have their pros and Cons. I am interested in taking pictures as well as shooting videos (more taking pictures than videos, but still videos are VERY important). Which of these camera's would you recommend and why? how should I weigh the pros and cons?

P.S. I have a telephoto sigma lens for Nikon, so that might impact my decision as well.

I'm a student going off to college next year and i want to get a camera between a point and shoot, and a DSLR. I've heard good reviews for both cameras but i'm not sure which one to get. I'm looking for a video camera but I don't know what they're called, help?

I'm looking for a good quality camera possibly a Nikon cause those are typically better than Sony. I want a portable camera for vlogging & sometimes it's really dark out so i need a camera that carries with it a built-in portable low & high light (but not blinding) so that when I do vlog in the dark or at night people can see whats going on in the picture.

Is there anything like that? I don't know what these kinds of cameras are called, it'd be great to have one.

Is it zoom recommended/good on Digital Photography?

I just bought a Nikon D3100 and I have been practicing photography because I like it, I have been taking photos on manual too to practice the aperture, shutter speed and and the ISO, and I tend to use zoom a lot because I think the object/person sees more focused because of the blurry backgound.

Is it recommended to use zoom or to get closer to the person/object I'm shooting?

P.S. I have a 18-55mm lens.

Low budget DSLR. Help.?

I'm an 18 year old girl who has a love for photography. This would be my first DSLR, but I have basic knowledge about ISO and whatnot. I would be using it for landscapes, concerts, and candid shots with friends. (anything that can apture good night shots is a BIG plus)

My budget is very limited. I was looking at the Nikon d3100, but I was considering the d5100 if the extra $150 is really worth it. I was also considering the Canon t3 or t3i, but it seems the Nikons outshine the Canons.

Advice anyone? Or suggestions for other cameras that I didn't mention?

Which Speedlight is best?

I am looking to upgrade my Nikon Speedlight to something with a faster recovery time and just something newer in general. I have been doing research on both the Nikon SB-800 and SB-900/910 and read great reviews on each one! Is it worth spending the extra money on the 900/10 if the 800 is so comparable? I understand that the 900's have more features, but I am unsure if they are really all needed? This flash will be used mostly in wedding photography. Any help would be great. Thanks!

How to change the speedlight setting for my d7000?

I am using sb700 n nikon d7000, i always use the speedlight in command mode, which means i didn't attach the speedlight on my camera, my problem is, when i use this command mode, i have to switch on the built in flash on my camera first, what should i do so that i can use the speedlight witout attaching it to my d7000 body n without popping out the built in flash in my d7000?

Nikon D3100 - Should I?

I just got on a new committee at school and it requires I take pictures with a DSLR camera. I used to own a Sony a57k, but we had to return it because of a moving issue. Anyways, I was looking into the Nikon D3100. I'm on a budget and I need a camera that can take basic pictures with a little action, (nothing as fast paced as sports, but if it's available, it'd be nice). .. Should I go with the Nikon D3100, or do you have other suggestions?

Also, what are some nice, affordable lenses you would recommend? I have to take pictures at events from pretty far away, so I'd like to get as far range as I could while spending as little as I can to get a quality lens. I know I'm not going to get champagne quality on a beer budget, but I want to know what's the best I can get on a "beer budget" …

If this makes a difference any, I'm into landscape and concert photography. Also, I plan on minoring in photography in college and volunteering to take concert photos at a music festival in the summer.

I've found several very good reviews regarding their service but am nevertheless sceptical about entering into business with them. I'm after a Nikon D700 + 70-200mm VRII which, from them, I can get for £3075 - far less than anywhere else.

I understand it's "grey imports" they sell. But can anyone offer me some insight into what this means exactly? I understand they're imports from the US, as apposed to China I guess?

I put an ad up on CL 2 days looking for a New Nikon D600 and 70-200 VR II

And this guy emailed me saying he can get the Lens(FOR $1850) and Camera(FOR $1800) everything brand new in box but he would have to order them which takes 7-10 days. I pay no money upfront all he asks is that I have the money ready once they arrive and be patient.

I should also note he says that he sells photo gear on the side and its not his primary job.

It all sounds to good to be true so im wondering if I should give it a shot or just buy them new at my local camera shop.

Fixed lens for Nikon D3100?

Right now I own a fixed 35mm Lens, but lately I've been a little unhappy. I feel like the only way to get a great depth of field with my lens is to be relatively close to my subject. I was curious if I could get a better depth of field with a 50mm lens. Say I was taking a picture of a person, and I wanted ankles to the head in my picture, would I be able to get a better depth of field with a 50mm than with a 35mm. Would you suggest that I just save for a 50mm 1.4?

I have a studio shoot tonight (my first one) and without looking a wally wanted to know if I need a lens hood? If its not completely necessary then I will order online and save £15… if I definitely need it ill have to go jessops now and pay alot more. This is an amatuer shoot so I wont be selling any of the photos… the model is professional though.
I think the lighting will be… light over the top of the model and one at the bottom.she will be on little platform.

What's the problem? Nikon D3100?

I bought this DSLR around half year ago, and that time just probably wanted to take photographs for college assignments.but for this semester, videography subject was included. Which i found out that everytime i record with my NIKON D3100, its has a lot of NOISE whenever i activated live view or even recording, my setting was:

ISO= 100 (low and still alot noise, really no idea)
aperture = F5.6 (i think this was not affect by the way)
shutter S = 1/50
resolution = 1280 720 30fps / 25fps
and manual exposure, class 10 8gb sd card

so any other problem which i didnt or forgot to change? THE NOISE was so disturb and i really need help for this cause my assignment gonna delay if this doesnt solve

Nikon D3100 stops taking pictures long exposure?

I am taking 30 second exposures of star trails with a nikon shutter wire release.It will take the 30 second pictures over and over but, I come back after 3 hours and the camera stopped taking pictures after about an hour.Is there a setting I can change to fix this?

What are my best options! HELP!

I am a beginner photographer and have a recently purchased Nikon D5100. I bought the kit lens (18-55mm) with it as well.

I am helping a friend out with some portraits. They know I'm a beginner and aren't expecting unbelievable quality, nonetheless, I myself want decent quality photos.

Im thinking of getting the Nikon D5100 as my first DSLR camera to do my film and media AS level work on, because the cameras in my college aren't brilliant.My first piece is for Film Studies and needs doing in December, I have to create a film. I can't edit NEF files with ViewNX 2?

I'm trying to edit Nikon RAW (.nef) files with ViewNX2.
I have an image selected with the program with the edit feature. The Adjustments tab on the side of the image has all the options greyed out, and I can't make any adjustments. For example, the white balance, exposure, sharpness, and etc, sliders are all greyed out and I can't change them.

How can I fix this?
If not, is there another program that can edit.nef files much better than ViewNX2?

Buying a DSLR camera in South Korea without having international warranty. Is it fine?

Hello,

I hail from India and currently in South Korea on business trip. I wish to buy a DSLR camera as they are far cheaper here as compared to prices in India.
However there is a catch! I am planning to buy either a Nikon or Canon camera. Unfortunately neither of the two companies offer world-wide warranty.
My question is: should I buy a camera despite the fact that in case of fault, claiming warranty from India would be literally impossible?

Nikon DX 35mm f1.8 vs FX 50mm1.4?

I have a D80 (DX) and D800 (FX) bodies. I am thinking of buying the 35mm f1.8 and putting it on the D80 body vs buying the 50mm 1, 4 FX lens. Shutter speed decreases in live view?

Hi, I'm using a DSLR (Nikon D5100, to be precise).

Suppose I set the shutter speed to 1/30, when i shoot using the optical viewfinder everything turns out fine.

But when I shoot the exact same picture ( same light, aperture, zoom, angle etc.) in Live View, it changes.

Manual Mode:
Optical Viewfinder: Shoots fine at 1/30.
Live View: The shutter speed still SAYS 1/30 but it visibly takes much longer. Hence, if my hands shake a little the picture is blurred. But if they don't shake, the picture turns out the same.

Auto Mode:
Optical Viewfinder: Shoots fine at 1/30
Live View: As soon as i switch to live view, the camera changes the shutter speed to 1/8 (or whatever it wants).

Basically, it seems that the camera needs to make the shutter speed longer in Live View for the picture to turn out the same way it would have when using the viewfinder.

Why does this happen?

Why do pictures I take with my Nikon D3000 come out blurry?

I don't have vision problems and I don't suck as a photographer, but every photo I take without Autofocus comes out blurry. I don't like using auto but if I don't my pictures are always slightly off. They look great small, but then I blow them up and it looks slightly blurry, making them unable to be enlarged without looking bad.

I tested it and when I use auto focus, my subject looks slightly blurry, but the photo comes out clear. What could be causing this and what steps could I go through to fix it? Is it worth repair or should I buy a new camera/lens and how can I troubleshoot on which to purchase?

I read in someones answer, that YONGNUO makes low price stuff that works.
i don't need HiFi-stuff, i just need to be able to adjust it (manually or remotely), and i want them to trigger simultaneously, that's it.
i want at least 2-3 flashes, so i don't see why i should by nikon.it get's a little expensive doesn't it? :)

Why is the Canon AE-1 Program's viewfinder so good?

And why aren't modern DSLRs' viewfinders just as good if not better? Is it an issue of parallax or something like that? I've been using my dad's old Canon AE-1 Program on and off (have some FD lenses whose modern equivalent I can't yet afford) and when I first compared the viewfinder of the AE-1 to that of a modern Canon Digital Rebel, I was amazed by how much better the AE-1's was -- much larger and clearer.

What surprised me even more is that apparently it is better than even the high end DSLRs' like the 5D, the following being taken from Ken Rockwell's site:

"Not only is the AE-1 Program a joy to use and makes great pictures, it has a huge, bright finder. Its finder is one of the largest, clearest and brightest finders ever made. I'm taking pictures for my school's Yearbook. I've already been taking pictures with my D3100 but when I take pictures of crowds at my school's football games the pictures turn out bad. Without flash the pictures look flat and flash makes the people look different.

Nikon 40mm macro vs Nikon 85mm macro?

Im currently using the nikon 40mm macro lens.
It works quite well but i shoot macro with no tripod, and i try to use high f stops to increase my depth of field.So they often come out slightly off because this causes my shutter speed to have to be lower.and more importantly i have to get right up on everything to get the minimum focus distance.

I was wondering if getting the 85mm would be helpful, seeing as the 85mm would mean i could be further away. (so to create depth of field and not scare away my subjects)
plus the fact that it has VR to stop the blur of it being hand held.

I assume it would be beneficial to upgrade, but i wanted to get some other opinions first.

Nikon D90 multiple exposure help?

On my Nikon D90, it won't let me do the multiple exposure mode.It doesn't allow me to select it on the menu, and when i try to, it says "This option is not available with the current settings." Can anybody tell me why/what settings to use to make it work? I can't figure it out.

Hiya, I'm buying my first DSLR and after much research I have decided I'm going to get a D7000.
The only thing I'm now stuck on is what lens to get with it. I've tried researching it but there's just so many recommendations that I keep jumping between lenses and can't make my mind up. I do intend to collect a kit over time however with the initial purchase of buying the camera, I'm not going to have too much money to spend on the lens just now so I'm willing to start of with a cheaper lens while I get used to the camera and such.
I can't decide whether to go with the 18-105mm kit lens or I quite like the look of the 50mm 1.8G.Is there's something else decent in this price range.

I do have a more special interest in Macro photography however I would like to keep my options open in terms of being able to explore different things. I do really like the look and image quality of the 50mm but I'm not sure what the realities of shooting with it will be as a main lens for a few months.

Help with my Nikon D5100?

Hi all! I shoot in manual, but sometimes I like to use Live View when I am shooting from an odd angle with the awesome tilting screen. Anyway, I have a problem with this though. There is no light-meter or anything so I can tell if the picture is n the correct exposure or not. Or the Live View doesn't change the way it looks according to the way I adjust the exposure.Am I just missing a setting on how to fix this, or is there no way? Thank you! DSLR camera options - opinions/recommendations?

I'm a high schooler and a pretty advanced photographer for my age. I will definitely be going on to art school for photography. I plan on buying a Digital SLR with in the next few months so I can continue better expanding my portfolio. The only thing is I don't know where to start; I've been using the same film SLR for years.

'Subject is too dark, cannot adjust exposure' Nikon D5100 error message?

My brother recently bought the Nikon D5100 DSLR. Everything seems to be fine with it, except taking photos indoors (even with the light on and curtains wide open in the day) seems to be a problem unless you set the ISO to around 800 and have maximum aperture width and a slow shutter speed. OR alternatively just use the flash with everything else on whatever settings you want.

An alternate message if you adjust the settings to cope with low-light conditions is 'lighting is poor, flash recommended'. Now this environment in a well-lit room doesn't seem to me to be poorly-lit.Is this normal for a DSLR to cope with lighting like this indoors? He hasn't told me if he encounters a similar problem with outdoor shots yet, however. We're quite new to DSLRS (we have read the manuals etc.though).

Which lenses and camera for short films?

I was just wondering which lenses and camera should I get, as im stuck choosing them for making short films, music videos, may be you could help.
Now I have nikkor 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.8, Carl zeiss 50mm 1.4
I probably will get cropped sensor camera as its so cheap - 600D (altho Im hesitating between 5d ii, but I will get camera man when filming and they normally have there own cameras, so not sure… )
And was thinking of getting 21mm, 35mm Carl Zeiss ZF lenses, have them cine modified, but they are a bit expensive, for getting them I have to "sell my kidneys"
Is it actually ok to shoot 1 film with vintage nikon+carl zeiss mixed? Like wide angle shots all with nikkon and close ups with zeiss. Zeiss has more cine look, wich Im after, I do not want to have video look, at all!!!
Shell I just get 28mm to my 50mm zeiss and 20mm nikkor and it will cover pretty much, but Im not sure if its ok mixing them in 1 project.

I am looking for new DSLR - currently shoot film & good P&S (and have been agonising over DSLR choice for too long). I have several manual Nikon lenses and a Nikon 24-120mm AF-D - no other AF lenses. My friend let me use his Nikon D3100, and when l uploaded the photos, l couldn't see them.Do l need to download something in order to see them? it says l can't view it until i make a copy of the photo, and when i do, it says l can't make a copy. Help with Nikon D5100 Photo Mode?

Okay, so I'm shooting indoors, on manual, and the picture always comes up dark. What I usually do in these situations is switch to auto, observe the settings, and mimic them in manual.

On auto, the shutter speed is 1/30 with the aperture fully open at 5.6, and the exposure mark is lined up at 0, and the picture turns out beautifully.No flash

When I mimic the shutter speed and aperture in Manual, my picture still comes up dark, and one thing i've noticed is that the exposure mark is waaay on the negative side. Why is perfectly lined up in auto mode, though?

I want to be able to shoot properly in Manual as well.

Is it my ISO?

Nikon D3000 help with dark settings?

Okay so I love my camera, except I can't seem how to figure out how to get it to respond to darkness! I've tried keeping it on auto, I've turned the flash on, I've turned it to night mode, I've tried everything, but my pictures are blurry and sometimes overexposed. Any tips or settings I should try out?

I have had my camera for about a year now but I have only just stated making videos with it. When I record I have it on 1080p 24fps, 100 iso and on pal. I know the camera is really good I just don't know how to set it up.

How to edit photographs to get a glossy finish?

I am a pretty amateur photographer currently shooting with a Nikon D90 and trying to find my way in respect of what i am actually good at taking, i especially enjoy portraits of people and find i get great shots but i want to add the glossy look to some of them and simply can't figure out how.

I have paint shop pro x 5 and photoshop cs5 to work with, i can pretty much get any effect i want but am at a total loss when it comes to that glossy magazine look.

I know i could simply print them onto glossy paper but i would like to be able to edit the look onto them to view on my computer first if you see what i mean.

Can anyone help with this?

Lots of interesting and somewhat conflicting opinions, having googled the subject i have found a plug in for CS5 that claims to gloss the images but have not yet decided if i should buy it as some of the sample images look metallic rather than glossy, i may well just print onto gloss paper the images i am happy with.

Pentacon 50mm 1.8 on Nikon SLR compatibility?

This is a really old lens I found.It has an adapter for F-mount and I tried it on a Nikon FM-10 and it seems to work. This lens is really weird though. When you turn the aperture ring it does nothing and is always wide open. There's a button on the side of the lens that you can press down and the more you press it down the smaller the aperture gets (f1.8 to f16). The lens also seems to meter correctly. I haven't took any pictures yet just testing it without film.Do you think this lens will work even though you have to use the button to control the aperture?
Added (1). Oh and when you press it down the viewfinder get's darker so this a stop down metering lens.
Added (2). ***I just figured it out, you set the aperture you want and press hold the stop down button and take the picture. The blades will go to that aperture. Now I'm wondering if the pictures will come out right I won't know till I try.

How to photography animals at dawn?

I am trying to figure out what settings to use for my Nikon D3000 around 6-8pm in wooded or shaded areas. I tried photographing deer this evening, but it was wanting to use flash-Dont really want to scare them away! Turning my flash off makes my photos blurry, grainy, and colorless. Any suggestions?

I was taking photos of football players the other night on my Nikon D3100 with a 55 to 200 mm lens and there was a storm cloud over head. The photos came out very dark and I was wondering if anyone had any advice for next time I am forced to shoot in these conditions. Thank you :)

What is the next lens I should buy?

I want a new lens, and I was wondering what would be a logical next step. Here's my kit so far:
-Nikon D3000 body w/18-55mm kit lens
-55-200mm Nikkor AF-S zoom lens

Why do my photos have a green tint when I upload them?

Sometimes when I resize images and upload them, the uploaded image has a greenish hue. I've noticed this happening when I edit them in Aperture (I usually just edit them in iPhoto because of this) and more recently with my new camera. I recently got rid of my old Canon T3 which didn't seem to have this problem. Now I have a Nikon D5100 and it seems like this is happening all the time. When I upload images to Blogger, the images have a green tint in smaller sizes, but when I make them larger, the problem goes away. Uploaded to foodgawker.com, I can't find any way to get rid of the problem. I've tried using Safari instead of Firefox and I've also tried assigning different color profiles (adobeRGB, sRGB, etc.). I'm out of ideas, so any suggestions would be awesome.

P.S. Here's an example of what I'm talking about:

This weird guy approached us in the park?

He was overweight in a black wife beater and blue jean cut off shorts in sunglasses over regular glasses. He said he was an aspiring photographer and wanted to take pictures of my girlfriend while we were studying and her standing up and sitting on a bench, normal pictures from different distances and angles.My girlfriend looked at them and she said they looked decent. We are weirded out though. He was really shaky and lied to us. He said he was going to take more nature pictures in the park but he instead drove out of the park immediately afterwards. Also his camera was a small Nikon or something, not a legit photography camera. He was sketchy. We are in college btw, 18 and 19. What should I have done? We were both weirded out afterwards and told the university police and bought some mace for my girlfriend. We live together, so I would be here if he was a creep and followed her. What are some opinions on this? She was sort of uncomfortable because she was wearing shorts.

What Program can I use to take photos with my Nikon D3100 camera on the computer?

I'm working on some stop frame animation projects and I want to have a program or a way to take a photo from the computer without having to press the button on the camera and risk moving it even just a bit.

It would be nice if the photo transferred to the computer as well, but that isn't necessary.

I have a Nikon D3100 camera and Windows 7 on my laptop.

Added (1). I do have a USB cord connected from the camera to the computer and the computer recognizes it, and I access the Photos on the SD card in the camera, but I have no way of controlling the camera, or taking a picture from the computer itself.

Ok, I'm inside a cave and then I want to use the Spot Metering on my Nikon DSLR to make the entrance of the cave bright and the interior of the cave (where I am) dark. Then, after locking exposure to the cave entrance, I want to recompose and move the cave entrance to the side of the frame.

My question is that, does half-pressing the shutter locks exposure as well as focus just like what holding down the AF-L/AE-L button does?

How to Enable My Nikon D3100 to Work As a Webcam?

I just can't find a way to configure it on the D3100, and that was my problem. You're really retarded. You should try working on listening skills, because quite frankly, you're a shitty epitome for old people.

@ Masticina Akicta - The reason I say this is because I use Helium Frog to capture my frames.It has onion skinning which shows if you moved the figure way too much, and it has a playback function. If I take pictures normally on my dslr, I can't playback at 15 fps or 24, and I cannot really tell if it looks smooth or choppy. I can play back the pictures, but not at the framerate I want it to be.As of right now, I think I'll just stick to my logitech webcam 9000.

Will Nikon ever make an AF-S version of the 50mm f1.2?

As you may know if you are familiar with the Nikon product line, Nikon has a 50mm f1.2 but it's an old, manual focus only lens, and it sells for about $725.

Nikon has already modernized its other 50mm lenses, with the f1.4G and f1.8G, and i think it's time the 50mm f1.2 makes a modern serious comeback.

What do you guys think?

Beach setting for Nikon D60?

Please help!

I am shooting with a Nikon D60. Right now, I don't have a reflector or external flash. I am solely using the camera. What settings should I use to get great beach photos? Also, should I use my 18-55 or 55-200? I have shot beach photos before, and they look good… but they are just missing that something special.It is usually because of the lighting. Lighting is my biggest problems. Please help with setting suggestions! thank you :)
