What lens do I get first?

Help picking a mid-level camera?

I am looking for a digital camera I can purchase on Amazon (it's a gift card) for at or below $150. In order of most important:
#1 price - if I HAVE to I could save up to a limit of $375…$100-$200 is better though
#2 compatibility w/a shutter remote (would appreciate if you know a good one too)
#3 compatible w/most tripods (I already have 2)
#4 anti-shake/stabilizer
#5 resolution/quality of still image
#6 SIGNIFICANT superiority to smartphones & tablets
#7 BONUS video quality - including ability to pick up sound from a few feet away

I need a nonbiased person ideally someone who can tell me the REAL difference between "new", "used", & "refurbished"… I've always gone for brands I recognized & only brand new but am trying to keep an open mind

I got a chance to see the Nikon S1 being used and was impressed tho don't know if it will fulfill my remote shutter accessory requirement (I don't expect is to be included but MUST be compatible) but is DOES have the option to switch lenses like my old one, the only other downside I could see is, according to this Amazon listing for this:
Nikon 1 S1 10.1MP Red Digital Camera with 11-27.5mm Lens (Certified Refurbished) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00THM31D0/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_FqOAvb03N097S
which an identical (though refurbished) cam to the mom's cam is that it is only 10 megapixels and I was hoping for at least 12 if not even as high as 16.

Right, my Nikon D200 has started to display -CHA- on the top LCD screen. I have tried both my CF cards, 4GB and 1GB and it isn't having it. Ive looked at the problem on various forums on Flickr and they say its a bent pin problem, none of the pins are bent? Anyone experienced this problem before or know what to do, many thanks Owen

What is the difference between these Nikon Lenses? - 1

I am saving up to buy a Nikon D5300 (my first DSRL camera) and I noticed there were a lot of options for lenses. For example:

10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED Wide Angle
18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Standard
18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II All-in-one
24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR Standard

28-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR II Telephoto
55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED VR II Telephoto
55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED VR Telephoto
70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED VR Telephoto
70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Telephoto

35mm f/1.8G Prime
50mm f/1.8G Prime
85mm f/1.8G Prime
40mm f/2.8G Macro

What do the numbers before the mm and after the f mean? And how would the picture be affected if I bought a Telephoto over a standard? I tried doing research on this, but I couldn't find anyone who did a broad comparison.
Which should I get if I want to take pictures of nature (and night and daytime) and architecture?

Thank you so much in advance

Good site to learn about cameras?

I'm 17 and still have a year left of school, but I'd like to enter a film university. I have been told I have the "director's eye", as when I think of a scene I know the shot, lighting, angle, etc that I want. However, I have close to 0 knowledge of how cameras work, including lens, focus, etc and all technical terms that accompany the art. Is there a website or even book that could help me learn how to achieve a certain feel to a scene using colors and lighting, the camera vocabulary, etc? Thank you.

How to remove grains from DSLR footage?

How to become a successful beauty YouTuber?

successful beauty guru?
Basically I recently started my beauty videos but because of exams, I couldn't be very active on YouTube.

Last week, I started posting videos again and I went from 146 subcribers to 249:)

I would like to know, what kind of videos do people like to watch on beauty channels? And which videos are the most popular?

My last video was a DIY which is what I've noticed a lot in my subscription box from popular youtubers lately.

http://youtu.be/anJq5OfGkPc

What other videos do you recommend doing to get more views and subcribers?

Also i'm thinking of getting a Nikon dslr or a Canon possibly.

Thank you:)

Nikon D5200 didn't click 999 photos with inbuilt intervalometer. Why?

OK, I found that there is a built in intervalometer in D5200.
I did the set up a night for star trail photography. Camera's battery was full, memory card was empty (16 GB). Now I set the no. Of shots to 999 with interval of 6 secs each.
My intention was to take as many shots as I can till the battery dies. But to my surprise, the camera stopped taking photos after some 160-170 shots. I dunno what happened. Battery wasn't exhausted, there was space in the memory card. Then I again started taking the photos.
Can anybody help me understand that why the camera didn't click 999 shots or clicked photos till battery died or till memory card got full?

Go pro photo quality?

I currently shoot with a Nikon d40 and a Sony a330. I've been wanting to do some more underwater photography looked into getting a housing for either of them but it's pretty price so recently I've been looking at the option of getting a go pro. But I'm unsure of the print quality and the ability to blow up the images. I'd probably use the video but not as often as the stills. I've also read that you can pull stills from videos and they are relatively good quality. I've been looking at reviews of the go pro hero 4 silver over the black mainly because of the lcd display and I don't think I need to take 4k videos. I'm looking for honest opinions and or other people's experiences with printing or using go pro stills. :)

Are canon and nikon digital SLR operating systems very different from one another?

im a visual communications student and will have photography later this year. I have my eyes set on nikon d5500 cause its the best camera which fits my budget. The problem is that i think my professors would be teaching with the help of canon dslrs (for demonstration purposes) and i dont want to get stuck if they talk about some setting change that applies to canon but doesnt apply to nikon. My canon alternative would be the t6s, but it doesnt pull me toward it cause of the AA filter and lower quality… Also its a little bit more pricey than the nikon d5500.

please help and im open to suggestions on the d5500 and t6s.

Camera taking dark pictures. Do I need to fix my Aperture ISO or what?

Please help. I'm an amateur photographer. Actually, I don't think I'm even there yet. Thing is learning dslr's can be stressful to the point where I've given up on it. I took it back today and we went to the park I was using it in Manual mode, with an f8 aperture and 100 iso. BUT I put up the Exposure compensation to 5.0 it was good because I no longer had dark images. However, now I'm back home using it in aperture priority, and shutter priority mode. The images are black. I'm getting stressed bc I just don't seem to understand what I'm doing wrong. I've tried learning through youtube and the Internet but it's so stressful. Any tips or any videos that can explain to me what I might be doing wrong, will be appreciated. Please Help. I think I have some talent for photography but honestly I don't seem to understand what I'm doing wrong.

Btw I have the beginner's Nikon D3300.

Why aren t there more versatile lenses available for APS-C and Full frame cameras?

Nikon has a 16 - 85mm for DX. And there s 18 - 105 I think. Is it impossible to make a 14 - 100? Would it be too big? Too expensive/difficult to make? Result in loss of sharpness or distortion? Or is Canon and Nikon and Sigma and Tamron and everyone else scared that if they give us a lens that is too versatile they would lose business? I get that pros would have dedicated pro lenses for ultra wide, primes, big zooms, etc, but there is a very big consumer and enthusiast market frustrated with having to spend lots of money on many lenses and having to carry them around.

I have a nikon d5500. The default kit lens 18-55 is doing alright for me, but I read that a fixed focal length prime lens does better job.

Ive spotted a large reptile near my area… Have you?

the woods… So large and seemingly empty of life but something more sinister lurks in its depths… People have many names for this beast from the east but i like to call him the protector of the forest. Where he treads the forest is bound to follow… So much charisma yet so intimidating. When you see him, do not panic, he smells fear, he feeds off it, when you see him, approach, tell him your reasons for being in the forest, make him believe you are here with good purpose, for one slip of the tongue means a swift death from his fiery breath. YES YOU HEARD CORRECTLY, this beast breaths fire, he has super sonic hearing and anaconda speed, if he hears you **** talking about the forest in your home thousands of miles away he will come at lightning speed and make you regret everything. He is the dragon. He is the bump in the night. This is not a question. This is a warning. Tread lightly, fellow humans, for the extinction event is about to occur. The picture shown below is my expert interpretation of an event on the streets of Nepal, this picture is a true event, not open for debate on it's integrity. The photo was shot with my nikon d3300, every gruesome detail is shown, if you are faint of heart, do not scroll down. Ive spotted a large reptile near my area Have you

Is Buying D7000 now (2015) a bad idea?

I've been using Nikon D3000 for a while now only with the kit lens (18-55mm). I want to buy a 50mm lens because I believe it will help the D3000 stink less when taking indoor shots.

However, when shopping around I came upon a D7000 clearance sale with price slashed to about 1/3. I know it's been discontinued and there's now D7200 but I have no money for that and I have seen images from D7000 in low light and was impressed.

Here are my options:
stick with D3000 and get, AF-S 50mm f1.8G and AF-S 55-200mm f4-5.6 ED (no VR)
OR
Buy D7000 and with (yet another) kit lens and add AF f1.8D and AF 55-300mm f4-5.6G.

I was told that the newer AF-S are sharper and have faster focusing. I'm really confused here. D3000 was fine for me but I struggle with it indoors and >ISO 800 has more noise than a rock concert.

Which of these is a better setup?

What Should I Bring On My Tour Through Europe?

I am leaving for a 2-week (Guided) student tour of Europe exactly two weeks from now. I know the essentials that I need to bring (Toiletries, Hat, Charger, Adapter, Exchanged Currency, etc.) but I want to make this trip fun too. I'll be able to take three bags (I can check one into the plane and I can take two carry-on bags).

What I'm already taking:
---------------------------
Laptop (Web surfing and editing/posting vlogs for/on youtube)
Camera (Nikon D5000) (I have a pocket sized camera, should I bring that too?)
Go-Pro (Action Camera)
Phone (We're temporarily changing my plan for international calls)
Water Bottle
Backpack (Possibly taking a 2nd one as my other carry-on bag)
Headphones
Pillow (Flights and Train rides)
(Possibly other things)

It would be awesome if you included necessities that I might not think of too!

Thanks!

Nikon D600 D610 -- Can choosing a lower resolution improve the noise level?

Nikon D600 D610 -- I realize this is already a very low-noise camera, but I still have this question: Does choosing a lower resolution (before or after shooting) improve the noise level?

- Maximum / native resolution = 6016 x 4016 = 24.3 MP

- Next available lower resolution = 4512 x 3008 = 13.6 MP
- Next available lower resolution = 3936 x 2624 = 10.3 MP
- Next available lower resolution = 3008 x 2008 = 6.0 MP

For example, downsizing from 24 MP to 6 MP could be accomplished by averaging 4 adjacent pixels into a single pixel, (losing resolution but reducing noise).

Is there a setting on the camera that implements such averaging?

If not, can this be done in Light Room or Photoshop or other imaging software?

thanks for your answers

If the lower resolutions were obtained by averaging down the maximum resolution, wouldn't the noise level be decreased?

If the camera does not "average down" to a lower resolution, but merely selects a certain subset of the native resolution pixels

My camera lens is making a weird noise and won't focus.help?

I have a nikon D50.it's a little old but works amazingly well! Today i went to take some pictures (in automatic focus) and the lens made a weird noise. It was a scratching or screeching noise. And it wouldn't focus. The lens works fine if it is in manual. But I'm worried about the lens. I think one of my friends messed with it while i wasn't looking and broke something?
is there anything inside of the lens that could have broken to make a weird scratching noise? Or could it just be dirt?
I just don't understand how it makes that noise in automatic but it doesn't make a sound in manual.
does anybody know what i should do?

So it was in 1/2 or 1/4 and I forgot that there weren't any batteries. When I pushed down the shutter it got stuck. Normally all you have to do to unstuck it is to take it M90 mode. I did but nothing happened. I put the batteries in and still nothing. It seems to be permanently stuck. Please Help!

What type of camera do these artists' use?

I was inspired by the artist's on this website to buy a dsrl camera:

http://www.tokyofaces.com

This will be the first dsrl camera I own and since I am new to the camera world, I don't know which one to buy.

I am stuck between a Canon Rebel T3i or T5i and a Nikon D5300. I really want a camera that can take good pictures outdoors, has a movable LCD screen, and takes nice quality video. Which camera is the best for what I want and does it look like these artists' used a Canon or a Nikon?

Nikon 1J1 only shoots in QuickTime?

I have a Nikon 1 J1 and I record video quite a bit, but I can't seem to figure out why it will only shoot QuickTime files. I was under the impression, it could shoot RAW. I've gone through the settings many, many times. Maybe I was wrong and it can only do QuickTime? Also when ever I turn off the camera and turn it back on it always starts up in the language settings, which is pretty fricking annoying.

Old Flash New Camera: Trigger Voltage for the Nimslo Opti-Lite / Nikon / Fuji X100s?

Hello, I recently bought a Nimslo Opti-Lite external flash, (comes with the Nimslo 3D film camera). I am aware that many old flashes are dangerous to use on new electronic cameras because of excessive trigger voltage. The cameras I intend to use it on are my Nikon D7000 and Fuji X100s. I have heard Nikons can handle a decent amount of trigger voltage, (some where around 6v) and also recall the X100s having a bit less (around 4), that is if I remember correctly. I know you that I can buy a flash voltage protecter but would not want to if I do not have too.

Primarily interested with Dual Flashes, I was also looking into lights like the Nishika Twin Light 3010 and the Albinar 100MDT-Twin Bounce Flash.

I have an old flash cable and was also wondering if I were to use that, would it alter the voltage the camera receives, making it safer.

I also have a pair of wireless speed lights and was wondering if the old flash could somehow damage the receiver that it's plugged onto?

If anybody can give me any information about voltage for the Nimslo, the Albinar, the Nisika, other similar flashes, voltage protectors, alternative solutions, etc… I would really appreciate it!
Added (1). I really appreciate all the help so far from everyone! Thank you very much for all of the advice and suggestions. I will definitely look into buying a voltage reducer and will also try to test the voltage on the Nimslo.

Thanks Again!

Olympus Stylus 1050SW shutter speed?

I got the Olympus Stylus 1050SW over a year ago, And I honestly love this camera. I wouldn't even trade it for a Nikon D7000 that's how much I love it. True, the lack of interchangeable lenses bugs me, and its slow auto focus annoys me to no end, but I still love it. Now, I've really been into trying to capture "flowing water", when the photograph shows that sort of motion blurred water over a clear and still background. The only problem is, my camera is either unable to change shutter speed or I haven't found out how yet. I've looked in my owner's manual but it doesn't mention shutter speed once. Does anyone know if it's even possible to change the shutter speed?
Thanks for your help.n__n

Photos cropped from what they looked like on the viewfinder?

Hi. I'm an amateur photographer. I had a Nikon D5100 and used primarily a Nikon 35mm f1.8 prime lens on it. My D5100 broke, I figured I might as well upgrade, and I bought a full frame D610. I am now using my 35mm prime on it. I was doing a session last night and something really annoying kept happening: I would see the photo in the viewfinder, say like my subject would be totally shown head-to-toe, but then when I took the picture, half his forehead would be cut off. It's like it would be cropped.

Is this happening because the 35mm is not totally compatible with the D610? Is it a DX lens? If so, what is a lens I could buy that is made for full frame cameras so that wouldn't happen? I really wanted to buy a Rokinon 85mm 1.4, but I don't know if that's a good choice.

And Please, for the LOVE OF GOD, don't be an a**hole about this question. I said I'm an amateur. Yes, I know, as so many "real" photographers have been so rude about before, I have NO business with a full frame camera because I'm just a dumb kid that knows nothing and doesn't belong in your field. I swear photographers can be so rude when I ask questions and they need to chill--i'm not trying to take your business or something okay, actually I'm attending college to be a pilot and this is just a hobby, and I'm just trying to get better. So please, if you can't help in a nice way, feel free to stay away. Sorry for those of you who weren't going to say something rude.

All i want to know is focal length and aperture relation?

ok, so i have Nikon D7000 and i know the basic relation of shutter speed aperture and iso. All i want to know is focal length and aperture relation.

as i zoom in the camera the f stop increases eg from 3.5 it becomes 5.6 some one told me that having large aperture gives more blurry background. (ie: f3.5 will give me more blur than f5.6, if i am not wrong)

but when i zoom my lens to 140mm minimum f value available becomes 5.6 and it gives me more blurry background than f3.5 at 18mm

why so? Am i wrong at some concept please make it clear:) thanks in advance

Nikon D90 Err message?

I was doing a Santa photo shoot yesterday for a local store with my D90. I knew that I was going to be going through batteries during the shoot so I used my vertical grip for the extra battery power. I was also using a 16Gb sd card in the camera. At one point the battery indicator started flashing on the top lcd panel on the camera. So I switched batteries and was ready to go again. As soon as I closed the battery cover on the grip and turned the camera back on, the top lcd panel started flashing "Err". I tried turning off the camera and waiting a few seconds before turning it back on, I tried removing the lens and putting it back on the camera as well. Still that Err message was there and the camera wouldn't function. I had changed nothing but the batteries and this caused the Err message to pop up. So I decided to switch memory cards and suddenly the Err message disappeared and the camera was ready to go again. So I figured that the memory card was full and that was what had caused the Err message to appear. However when I returned home and checked the 16Gb memory card I noticed that there was only 45Mb used. Any idea what might have caused the Err message?

How to film a concert on a dslr?

I have a Nikon d5300 camera, and would love to film concerts on it. I was recently at a small concert this past weekend, and taped the whole thing. The video and sound quality was amazing, a little too amazing. The camera picked up all the sounds of the audience singing along to the point where you could barely hear the singer. I am going to a Lana Del Rey concert later this month that will have thousands of people in the audience, and a Marina and the Diamonds concert where I will be in the very front of the venue; is there any way to get good sound on the recordings without the audience noises ruining the video? Thank you so much in advance!

Lens for my Nikon D3300?

I am using this camera for a variety of purposes (videos, nature photography, sport photography, etc), so I need a lens that will be fit for all of them! Right now I am using the lens that came with the camera, which is a DX VR AF-S NIKKOR 18-55mm 3.5-5.6 II. It works alright, but for me, I need something with greater zoom capabilities. I am looking at getting another lens with a max focal length of 200mm. I am a college student (film school), so I do not have a ton of money to spend. Basically, I am wondering if I would be better off getting an 18-200mm lens and selling my 18-55mm lens, or just getting the cheaper 55-200mm lens and keeping my 18-55mm lens as well. I know there are tradeoffs in both scenarios, but the bottom line is that I need a lens with better zoom capabilities. I am on a budget, so I don't have many options, but I feel that one of these two would be my best bet. Please give me some advice as to which direction I could go and any suggestions are appreciated!

6.5 Creedmoor or a 22-250?

Looking to get a new rifle. As the title might have indicated I am between a 6.5 Creedmoor or a 22-250. The Creedmoor is less expensive but the Nikon 3x9 on it is unacceptable but I have more use for a Creedmoor. On the other side. 22-250 is cheap to shoot, it will help me learn how to compensate for wind, and the glass is of better quality and magnification but I really do not have a need for the caliber. It's too big for turkey, in my opinion its too small for deer, and in eastern South Dakota there is not much for Varmint hunting without driving 3 or 4 hours. Essentially, one will be more useful but requires upgrades first, the other is cheap to shoot and can make me a better shooter.

Are Nikon the only manufacturer that charges extra for a guarantee in the UK?

If I buy a FIAT, Ford, VW, Mercedes, Renault, abroad the warranty is included in the price for the UK.

Buy a Nikon camera and it isn't unless I have paid the over inflated UK price for it, same product, same factory, same model, it has no warranty in the UK!
Is it because they now manufacture in China?

My Nikon won't focus through viewfinder but the photos come out fine?

So all of the sudden my Nikon d7000 won't focus well through my viewfinder, but the photos come out in focus when I use auto focus. I can't use manual focus because my camera shows me that the photo isn't in focus no matter how much I focus it manually. Maybe I just need to clean my contacts? I used another Lens and the same problem happened. It was fine the day before

Nikon D5300 camera - multiple shots?

Hi all,

I just got a Nikon D5300, but I think there's something wrong with it.
I set the camera settings to both Continuous H and Continuous L but it only takes a single frame.
Am I doing something wrong? Do I have to change something else?

I know it's a stupid question but I would appreciate the answer
Thanks in advance

Should I Take my DSLR to HighSchool?

Hello everyone, I just shifted to nyc about like 3-4 months ago and I got into high school as a freshman. I like photography, I use a nikon d7100 with 18-140mm lens, usually back in my country our school did not allow any electronics so I could never take it to my school. I was an official photographer back than for my school and I would take it in events. My work also got published in a magazine. So I was thinking is it okay?/weird to take a dslr in school with you because all you could capture is your friends. My school dont have any restrictions. My cousin is a senior official photographer in another school and I also want to be one in mine, so yeah. What do I usually capture inside the school except friends?
