How to use flash on a camera properly?

Here's a picture of my attempt at bohek photography of a dead flower.

It was on 105mm at 1/10s, F/5.8, ISO 400, EV -2.0, Flash EV -1.0
Im new at photography and I was wonder how could you get the background brighter when using flash on a Nikon D90. It seems like the flash makes the object near the camera to appear really bright compared to the background.

Is it used for zooming in or focusing while taking a picture or both? If both, do all types of DLSR lenses focus and zoom? What does the lens on the Nikon D3200 do? (focus or zoom or both?)

Nikon Lenses for Outdoor sport or day-day photographs?

What Nikon camera lenses are used to shoot the photographs of runners in Tough Mudder. I really like the bokeh and the sharpness of the people in the photos. Plus i dont see any blur which means it must be a reall y really fast lens. Any idea /recommendation please. I have a D90 if that would help.

I need motivation to make YOUTUBE videos?

Hi guys. I am a youtuber. I had a family channel with over 1K subscribers but it's very difficult to film with multiple people so I decided to begin my own show. So far my channel only has 4 videos (which are vlogs not even the real stuff) and I already have over 300 subscribers. I have thousands of followers online and I know for sure that my followers will back my new channel. I have an entire studio set up with green screen and lighting, I have good editing software and a Nikon all ready to go almost. I'm not that much of a noob I've done this for a while now. But here's the problem. Everytime I go to film I suddenly feel incredibly unmotivated to the point I haven't filmed a video yet. I have good ideas but when I walk in to my studio to shoot I get a huge wave of exhaustion almost and a strong unmotivated feeling. It's hard to film feeling that bad. I really WANT to film but I'm caught in this web of unmotivation. Does anyone have any good suggestions on how to beat this? Thanks so much!

What camera should I upgrade to? - 1

I currently have the Nikon D60, but want to upgrade. I want to keep a reasonable price range, as I am a amateur-beginner photographer. Preferably a camera with video, but if not that's alright. I prefer Nikon, but I wouldn't mind a Canon. Please help!

Nikon D1500 semi automatic settings not adjusting properly?

The dial modes A, and S (shutter speed) are semi automatic, so when you set the aperture the camera automatically adjusts the shutter speed or / and exposure to give you the best image possible, even if this doesn't always work out. When i fist got my camera it did this perfectly. However now these settings no longer self adjust. I believe i can adjust everything manually but being a beginner and in photography class i really need to use these settings and i cant figure out why they are not self adjusting, it's as if they don't exits. Not only that but however high or low i set either of these settings the picture always comes out dark, whereas on a slow shutter speed i would have thought the image would over expose if the auto settings were broken. All of the other automatic modes work, it's just the semi automatic modes. Is there a setting i have switched the camera to to result in this? Or a reset button? Or even just a clue as to why this is happening. I have checked the manual it says nothing about this. I have used these mods in plain daylight too. My photography teacher didn't seem to understand my question… Thanks!

Recommended camera for beginning hobbyist around $500?

My girlfriend and I are looking for a camera that we can use to take pictures of family and vacations that won't have blur and would be a good camera to learn basic photography techniques (using the cameras settings rather than turning the dial and hitting click.) I used my father's Canon Rebel T5i and found that it took great pictures and might be considering that, but that is the only camera I've used sans my phone's camera and I know there are, or could be, better options. I've been reading reviews on the Rebel line (t3i, t5i, slr) as well as Nikon, specially the Nikon 3300. We're looking to spend in the $350 to $600 range. I've noticed bundles that include filters, cleaning kits, additional lenses, ect. So that could come into cost if worthy and pointed in the right direction but isn't important. Any input is most appreciated.

Examples of main use:
Football games
Kids playing in the yard
Scenic opportunities - mountains, wildlife, nature (we live in Colorado haha)
Vacation moments
Hanging out with friends
Eventually I would like to take a more artistic approach to those examples, hence fourth the move from camera phone to mid range budget.

What do I need to take pictures indoors?

I'm kind of new to the photography world and teaching myself. Ive always just taken outdoor photos using natural lighting. If I I notice sometimes when it is darker out my camera (Nikon D5100) wont even take a picture because it cant find a focus. If I wanted to take pics indoors like at a wedding reception what would I need in order for my camera to takes pics with no problem and not have trouble the whole time trryying to take one picture? Thanks
