Help with Nikon D5100 Photo Mode?

Okay, so I'm shooting indoors, on manual, and the picture always comes up dark. What I usually do in these situations is switch to auto, observe the settings, and mimic them in manual.

On auto, the shutter speed is 1/30 with the aperture fully open at 5.6, and the exposure mark is lined up at 0, and the picture turns out beautifully. No flash

When I mimic the shutter speed and aperture in Manual, my picture still comes up dark, and one thing i've noticed is that the exposure mark is waaay on the negative side. Why is perfectly lined up in auto mode, though?

I want to be able to shoot properly in Manual as well.

Is it my ISO?

Thanks in advance.
