How to edit photographs to get a glossy finish?

I am a pretty amateur photographer currently shooting with a Nikon D90 and trying to find my way in respect of what i am actually good at taking, i especially enjoy portraits of people and find i get great shots but i want to add the glossy look to some of them and simply can't figure out how.

I have paint shop pro x 5 and photoshop cs5 to work with, i can pretty much get any effect i want but am at a total loss when it comes to that glossy magazine look.

I know i could simply print them onto glossy paper but i would like to be able to edit the look onto them to view on my computer first if you see what i mean.

Can anyone help with this?
Added (1). Lots of interesting and somewhat conflicting opinions, having googled the subject i have found a plug in for CS5 that claims to gloss the images but have not yet decided if i should buy it as some of the sample images look metallic rather than glossy, i may well just print onto gloss paper the images i am happy with.

Going to put this one to vote.
