Need tips for taking good low-light pictures with a nikon d3200?

I recently bought a Nikon D3200 and am currently new to the photography world. I was experiencing the camera in different light situations but when I came to a low light area or room, the pictures would come out: 1- brighter than what I wanted it to be, taking out the dramatic low light I wanted and 2- came out all grainy with a lot of noise. So how do I set the apertures and shutter speed and modes? Or should I change the camera??? Because I wanted dramatic low light pictures taken w/o flash so any tips to shooting those kinds of images would be grand.
