I was at the beach with my new Nikon D5100 recently, to try to take some water shots. I wanted to try a slow shutter speed to make water look silky as it cascaded over the rocks. But when I had reasonable settings at 3 sec shutter speed, It was way too bright. I kept changing settings and it was still too bright. So, out of frustation, I tried to make it really dark.At 1/2 sutter speed, f/32 aperature, 100 ISO, and exposure compensation all the way down, it was still too bright. This was around 3:00 PM in cloudy weather.
I'm new to photography. What am I doing wrong? How do people get those great silky waterfall shots in broad daylight?
